Vivitar 3713A reader is looking for a review of the 3 megapixel Vivitar Vivicam 3713 – if you own this camera, please take some time out and email me or post a quick review of the camera in the comments. Vivitar’s website seems to lack any information about the camera, however there is some information on the Argos website, where the camera is available for £39.99. A guide to writing a reader review can be found here. If you would like to email me some pictures to share then please do that as well.

Updated 20/10/05: I received this email from Peter Tattersall: “I bought this camera three months ago for my daughter. The image quality is poor for 3mp, it uses standard AAA batteries that run down in no time so we had to buy rechargeable ones, and I’ve had great difficulty downloading the images onto an Apple imac. I’m taking it back to Argos, it may just be that this one is faulty. Although it looked great value I wouldn’t recommend it.”

Updated 09/07/07: Eddie emailed me this review: “Hi I bought this camera a while ago off ebay for £10, you get a mixture of good shots and blurred shots, lost my CD so can’t use the webcam, searching internet for software but no luck. I don’t use the flash because you can’t make out what you’ve just taken. Video is good. I like the LCD screen, helps to see what you’re taking, don’t like the old view finders. I am happy with this product, I don’t think I would have bought it for £39.99 though. “

I needed a digital camera for my hlidays, as the one I had refused to work, so I chose the 3713 as a ‘cheap’ alternative. Inspite of it’s low cost, the quality of the photos are excellent. Controls/menus are simple but effective, start-up time is quick and the lack of auto-focus means you can literally ‘point-and-shoot’. Only fault I can find so far is that the LCD screen is difficult to see in bright sunshine, but having a view-finder, like the old fashoined cameras, gets around this when taking photos. All in all, excellent value for money.

I bought one. It’s ok if you want to do point and shoot holiday snaps.Close ups? Don’t bother if you want high quality (eg for ebay), it’s not up to it.Can’t see the screen in daylight, but it’s got a viewfinder, so…Battery life good, Software well thought out, but can hang when you’re trying to view your shots slideshow. If you’re really not fussy and want something cheap, then its prob worth getting.

I have just brought the Vivicam 3713 and have a query. If I set the White balance to auto, when I press the shutter it dose’nt always take the photo.Sometimes it can take up to 5 presses until the photo takes.Yet if I set the wb to anything other than the auto it works everytime. Can you please help.Cheers,Steve Cooper.

Got a 3713 free with an insurance policy. I am a student and have just done a graphics assignment with it. OK. Could use re-chargeable batts. Close up no good. Agree with auto white balance comments?? Software on CD for use as web-cam. Does anybody know if or how create date can be set? Mine is always 00:01 01/01/2003 ???

what a peace of c**p this bit of plastic takes bad photos that would shame a drunck wedding photgrapher the closeups are pixild 2 the maxed the screen is usless in daylight and displays nothing in the shadow only the view-finder is the only thing that works. Not worth the lint and 2 buttens in your nan’s pocket letalone your hard worked money

Bought this camera for our son for Christmas. OK on Alkaline batteries but rechargeable ones do not work. Suspect it is a connection problem so taking it back to Argos.

Hi,I have same problem with vivtar webcam in yahoo just shows black screen even though I can capture video fine with other program. Yahoo uses “direct show” (microsoft?) maybe there is a way to change that…Andrew

Got one of these for Christmas. Cheap quality but what do you expect for £39.99.One major annoyance though. You can’t save the auto-flash option in the camera settings. So if you take a lot of pics indoors you have to go into the flash menu everytime you switch it on. I could not believe this – the manual says that this is a ‘power saving feature.

Reviews were positive until everyone else (and us) got one for Xmas!!!We struggled to take a clear picture. The real pain was the auto-flash option being unselected each time and the time taken charging the flash. Jst like a cheap disposable 35mm does. We were never sure when the picture was taken and each picture was blurred. It “ate” batteries and re-chargeables never worked. They do in our Nikon 3200!!We thought perhaps it would be better in the summer but “luckily” one of the buttons got stuck when Grandad was looking through the pics so it has GONE BACK TO ARGOS.Not a recommendation as a point and shoot choice.

Very poor I had this for christmas was replacing an old 2 mega pixel. All photos were blurred. Keeps freezing and refusing to do anything. It’s on its way back to Argos rather stick to my old camera it is more reliable. I suppose in the end you get what you pay for!!!!

Had the Vivitar now for 18 months. Still working 100% & I have it on 6Meg. Many people have commented on the excellent picture quality on this setting. For what it was bought for, this as proved to be an excellent camera, well worth double its’ price
