more DigiCamReviews and news

Cameras.co.uk review the new Olympus C-180, a five mp compact digital camera, with no optical zoom, available in the uk for just over 100 pound.

While we're still waiting for some real sample photos, there is a nice preview of the Fujifilm FinePix S9500 at LetsGoDigital.org. Aparently it ships on October 1st, so we shouldn't be waiting too long for some sample pictures.

DigiCamReviews and news round-up

briefly... PhotographyBLOG mention the launch of the Kodak Easyshare-One digital camera with wifi. The idea being that you get a wifi printer or you go around looking for t-mobile hot-spots to print your work out on. The screen is 3inch and can twist around, and the camera appears to be 4 megapixel.

PhotographyBLOG also mention the following reviews:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 [5 megapixels and a 12x image stabilized Leica lens]

Pentax OptioWP, a waterproof digicam reviewed by Steve's digicams.

Fujifilm Finepix S3 pro - a 12.3 megapixel SLR style digital camera.

The Olympus EVOLT E-500 looks like a nice digital SLR too - dpnow has a nice gentle introduction to whats special about this camera and dcresource has done a 'p'review

Speaking of high end digital cameras, TheImagingResouce have also reviewed the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II - here - and say Bottom line though, this is an absolutely amazing camera, easily eclipsing the resolution and noise levels (grain structure) of 35mm film. (And probably medium format as well.)

Additionally, the new cameras feature a new UI display designed to capitalize on the larger screen size."

Image stabilisation for all digital cameras

DigitalPhotographyBlog have posted a useful tip on how to attain image stabilisation even if your digital camera doesn't support or have image stabilisation built in:

"Here’s a neat tip for digital photographers trying to shoot at slow shutter speeds without image-stabilized (IS or VR) lenses. Actually, it can even be helpful for those using IS/VR lenses when you’re really pushing the limits of hand-holdability."

Canon EOS 5D Field Report

Luminous-Landscape have published their Canon EOS 5D Hands on field report:

"What makes the 5D of special note in today's camera marketplace is not so much that it's full-frame, and not that it's just shy of 13 Megapixel – though both are very desirable traits. What makes the 5D of singular interest is that the camera's size and weight is little bigger than that of its stablemate, the Canon 20D, as well as most of the other current 5-8 Megapixel DSLRs with reduced-frame (APS-sized) sensors."

Casio Exilim EX-P505 Review

DigitalCameraInfo.com review the 5 megapixel, 5x optical zoom Casio Exilim EX-P505 - it features MPEG4 video recording, and a 2" swivel screen:

"Aiming for the hybrid market, the Casio Exilim Pro EX-P505 adds camcorder-like features to its digital camera body. The P505 has 5 effective megapixels for still imaging on its 1/2.5-inch CCD and full VGA resolution in its four movie modes. Heavily marketing the camera's video capabilities, Casio included a unique Past Movie mode that starts the recording five seconds before users press the shutter release button. The Casio P505 has a 5x optical zoom lens that works in the movie mode too. The camera body is compact, but the 2-inch LCD can fold outwards and rotate in classic camcorder style to provide added shooting flexibility."

Nikon D50 Digital SLR Review

DigitalCameraInfo.com have reviewed the 6 megapixel Nikon D50 Digital SLR:

"The Nikon D50 is a solid contender among entry level DSLRs, providing users with a 6 megapixel APS-format sensor, 2.5 frames-per-second burst mode, vibrant color rendition, and excellent noise performance. Available at an MSRP of $899.95 and selling for around $700 or even below online, the D50 falls into an increasingly crowded segment of the DSLR realm. Supplying a 2-inch, 130,000 pixel LCD and strong autofocus system, the rugged consumer-level DSLR is even smaller than the D70 and contains a very deep feature set and host of manual controls that will help first time digital SLR owners hone their skills and grow into the medium."

Canon Powershot S2 IS Review

Cameras.co.uk review the new 5 megapixel Canon Powershot S2 IS ultra-zoom, it features a 12x optical zoom lens and a swivel screen:

"The Canon Powershot S2 IS is a five megapixel digital camera with a twelve times optical zoom lens. It has a range of advanced features that mark the Powershot S2 IS down as a camera for someone who sees photography as a hobby rather than someone who is looking for a simple point and shoot model."

Nikon D70s DSLR Review

ByteSector review the new Nikon D70s Digital SLR:

"The Nikon D70 has been out for a bit over a year now, and has been considered by many to be one of the best low-to-mid range digital SLR cameras on the market. Despite how well it performs, Nikon decided to improve upon it with the release of the D70s. This isn't a total remake or an entirely new camera, but rather a D70 which has been notably improved upon."

Canon Digital IXUS 750 / SD550 Review

DCResource review the 7 megapixel Canon Powershot SD550 / Canon Digital IXUS 750 - it features a 2.5" screen, a 3x optical zoom lens, and a curvy champagne metal body:

"The Canon PowerShot SD550 ($500) is an update to the popular SD500, which was released just seven months ago (click here to read our review). There's one big change on the SD550 when compared to its predecessor, plus a few smaller ones as well."

Ricoh GR Digital Preview

Ricoh GR DigitalLetsGoDigital have a preview of the new 8 megapixel Ricoh GR Digital:

"The Ricoh GR Digital is a kind of camera that GR-fans or owners of one of Ricoh's analogue GR series cameras have been waiting for. From a photographer's point of view it is a joy to see that a company like Ricoh takes the effort to develop a digital jewel like the Ricoh GR Digital. A fantastic high quality GR lens, a great versatility as a result of using the converter to create a 21mm lens and the highly attractive optional viewfinder that gives the Ricoh GR Digital a distinctive look and feel."

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 First Look

Imaging-Resource have posted a first look review of the new 10 megapixel Sony Cybershot DSC-R1:

"Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-R1 is one of the latest in the long (and incredibly broad) line of digital cameras that reflects Sony's commanding position in the digital camera marketplace. The Sony R1 (considerably) extends the high range of the Cyber-shot line, offering a full 10.3 megapixels of resolution, via a Sony-built CMOS sensor. The CMOS sensor in the DSC-R1 is just slightly smaller than the "APS-C" size imagers used in most current digital SLRs, and brings with it the expected improvement in image noise levels and ISO sensitivity that naturally accompany larger sensor chips."

Konica Minolta Dimage X1 Review

TrustedReviews review the new ultra compact 8 megapixel Konica Minolta Dimage X1 - it features a 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" screen and anti-shake CCD and optical zoom lens:

"The latest addition to the X series is this, the X1, and as its numeral would suggest, it represents something of a re-launch for the line. After the competent but rather pedestrian X50 and X60 models, the X1 also represents a return to the spirit of innovation and style that made the series successful in the first place."

Philips 7FF1AW Photo Display Review

Engadget are the first to review a new digital photo display by Philips - the Philips 7FF1AW Digital Photo Display:

"Philips’ push into the digital photo display arena lends some credence to a market which until now has been ignored by the big boys of display manufacturing. Another sign (as if we needed one) that digital photography has truly gone mainstream. What’s driving them? Well, Philips’ research claims that a paltry 20% of all digital photos and digital scans of old prints ever get pressed to paper."

Kodak Easyshare One Preview

DPNow have a hands on preview, with sample photos, of the new Kodak Easyshare One - it features Wi-Fi, a 3x optical zoom lens, a large 3" swivel touch screen, 256mb of built in memory, and a 4 megapixel sensor:

"There is a lot to say about the new Kodak EasyShare One camera and Kodak's dedicated EasyShare Gallery support for this camera. We've had a chance to use one and it certainly advances the digital photography experience significantly, though we'll reserve full judgment until we get a retail sample to test."

How-To: The Pros and Cons of Lens Flare

CreativePro: How-To: The Pros and Cons of Lens Flare "Lens flare -- whether it's in the form of bright streaks, random polygons, or an overall washed-out look -- is a hazard when you're shooting photos near a bright light source. Learn how to avoid it, and even how to exploit it to make stunning imagery."

Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D Review

DesignTechnica review the new DSLR from Konica Minolta, the Maxxum / Dynax 5D with built in anti-shake CCD:

"The Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D is a bruiser of a camera, weighing in at 20.8 ounces for the body only, six ounces less than the 7D. The 7D has a magnesium body accounting for the extra weight. When you add the things you’ll need such as a lens, CompactFlash card and battery it tips the scales at 33.4 ounces. Remember: D-SLRs are commitments so expect to buy a bag in order to carry all the goodies around."

Samsung SC-D6040 Duo Review

Steves-Digicams review the Samsung SC-D6040 Duo - it's a combination digital camera and digital camcorder, featuring two lenses:

"The Samsung SC-D6040 DuoCam is a true hybrid video camcorder and digital still camera packaged in one body. It has two completely separate imagers, electronics and zoom lenses. Most of the other 'hybrid' cameras use a common imager and lens and don't really do all that well at capturing high resolution still images. The DuoCam has a 680K pixel CCD imager for the camcorder side along with a 10x optical zoom lens and stores MPEG4 encoded video on standard MiniDV cassette tapes. And it has a 4-megapixel CCD imager for the digicam side combined with a larger diameter 3x optical zoom lens. High resolution still images and MPEG4 video is saved directly to digital media - Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Secure Digital or MMC type flash cards can be used."

KODAK Easyshare V550 Review

LetsGoDigital review the ultra compact Kodak Easyshar V550 - it features a 5 megapixel sensor, a 3x optical zoom lens and a 2.5" screen:

"Now that Kodak stopped manufacturing digital SLR cameras, the entire series of digital cameras consists of EasyShare digital camera models. EasyShare does exactly what the name tells you: easy sharing of pictures. Core of the system is the docking station. You place the camera in the station and pushing the button once sends your photos to email, hard drive or printer. It works as simple as it sounds."

Samsung Digimax i5 Review

Megapixel.net review the ultra compact Samsung Digimax i5, it has a 2.5" screen, a 3x optical zoom lens, and features a 5 megapixel sensor:

Canon EOS-20D DSLR Review

DansData, famous more so for writing about computer equipment, have reviewed the Canon EOS-20D Digital SLR:

"The EOS-D60 begat the EOS-10D (basically the same camera with a few extras; upgrading from a D60 to a 10D is not a rational act), and then the line branched out with the cheaper, fewer-controls-and-features-but-still-very-much-the-same EOS-300D. And then came this. The EOS-20D is, as you'd expect, better than its predecessors in every way, but it's also a lot cheaper than any DSLR of a few years ago."

Konica Minolta Dimage X1 Review

Steves-Digicams have reviewed the new 8 megapixel Konica Minolta Dimage X1, it features a 2.5" screen and anti-shake CCD and 3x optical zoom lens:

"The 8-megapixel DiMAGE X1 is extremely compact and represents a fusion of Konica Minolta’s best imaging technologies including the revolutionary Anti-Shake technology and high-resolution movie clips – both a first for the DiMAGE X line – to provide the best image quality possible. To accommodate the camera’s high resolution while keeping the body as slim as possible, the DiMAGE X1 employs a newly designed “non- protruding” 3x optical zoom lens."

Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ30 Preview

LetsGoDigital have a preview of the new Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ30, it features a Leica image stabilised 12x optical zoom lens, and an 8 megapixel sensor:

"The brand new Panasonic flagship is a pro-consumer model with an 8 Megapixels CCD on board. The Panasonic FZ30 has a newly developed 12x optical zoom featuring a mechanically linked zoom ring, fully internal zoom and image stabilization. This powerful zoom lens also features a manual focus ring (electronic). A key feature of the DMC FZ30 is the Optical Image Stabilizer, MEGA O.I.S. it is deservedly continued as Panasonic advanced the theory that it should be standard in all digital still cameras. The newly incorporated Extra Optical Zoom extends the zoom ratio by using the center part of the high resolution CCD. We, Lets Go Digital had the opportunity to review the Panasonic DMC FZ30."

Olympus SP-500 Preview

Olympus SP-500Imaging-Resource have a preview of the new Olympus SP-500 - Olympus' new ultra zoom camera, with a 6 megapixel sensor, and a 10x optical zoom lens:

"This has been a year of a return to quality design and execution for Olympus, and it shows again in the SP-500UZ. The Ultra Zoom line of cameras was remarkable when it debuted, offering surprisingly long zooms that were unsurpassed by any other digital camera. Over the years, the UZ line got smaller and smaller, and lost its large grip, which was a major feature of digicams of the day. Up to last year's introduction of the C-765, they'd lost the ease of AA rechargeables as well; but the new SP-500UZ brings all of that back. It has more of the raw camera feel we're used to getting from the company's higher-end line, like the C-7070, yet it's still small and light."

Sony Cybershot DSC-T5 Review

Imaging-Resource review the ultra compact Sony Cybershot DSC-T5 - it features a 3x optical zoom lens and a 2.5" screen:

"Sony cameras offer excellent features and performance, good build quality and great picture quality. Sony currently offers no fewer than five distinct lines of cameras, spanning an incredible range of features, price, and performance. In their "Compact" line, they've now added a new five-megapixel model that builds on the success of the preceding T1 model. With a 3x optical zoom lens, compact design, and very generous 2.5-inch LCD screen, the new DSC-T5 is about the thickness of a ladies' compact and very pocket friendly. Automatic exposure control offers point-an-shoot ease, with a handful of scene modes for more difficult shooting situations."

Olympus Mju Digital Stylus 800 Review

Cameras.co.uk review the 8 megapixel Olympus Mju Digital 800 / Stylus 800 - the all weather digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens, and 2.5" screen:

"By the end of my tests I was a big fan of the Olympus MJU 800. It is a well made digital camera that takes good photos both indoors and outdoors. The in camera guide to taking photos is a marvelous innovation and should be applauded. The MJU 800 also scores highly for design and ease of use."

Olympus Mju Digital 800 / Stylus 800

Olympus Mju 800We all know that the Olympus Mju Digital 800 / Stylus 800 (announced in May) has ISO settings upto 1600 in manual mode (at the 3mp resolution) - but it can also go as high as ISO2500 when the dial is set to the 'anti-shake mode' symbol, and ISO is left on auto - which is strange because this isn't mentioned in the specifications.

I've started an Olympus Mju Digital 800 sample photo gallery here, with example photos, I'll add more as the days go by.

Ricoh Caplio RR530 Announced

Olympus Mju 800 / Stylus 800 Review

TrustedReviews review the new 8 megapixel weatherproof Olympus Mju Digital 800 / Stylus 800 - it features a 2.5" screen, a 3x optical zoom lens, full manual controls, and ISO upto 1600:

"When I reviewed the Olympus mju Digital 500 back in March, I was very impressed with it. Design, specification, build quality, performance and picture quality were all of the highest standard, in fact I had to resort to nitpicking about the battery hatch in order to find any fault whatsoever. Now six months later we have the new £256.59 mju 800, which is one of the five new 8 megapixel compacts that are currently available, the others being the Nikon CoolPix P1, the Canon Powershot S80, the Konic Minolta Dimage X1 and the Ricoh Caplio GX8."

Konica Minolta Dimage X60 Review

DigitalCameraInfo review the ultra compact 5 megapixel Konica Minolta Dimage X60 - it features a 3x optical zoom lens and a 2.5" screen:

"The Konica Minolta DiMAGE X60 is one of many point-and-shoot oriented digital cameras that rely on a 3x optical zoom lens to refract images to its 1/2.5-inch 5 megapixel CCD. Shielded by a sliding lens cover, the X60 gains some distinction with a non-protruding zoom lens that remains plush with the front plane of its 3.3 x 2.2 x 0.9 inch, 4.1 ounce aluminum frame."

Read my Konica Minolta Dimage X60 Review here.

Panasonic Lumix FX9 Review

DCResource review the new ultra compact Panasonic Lumix FX9 - it features a 6 megapixel sensor, Leica 3x optical zoom lens, with Mega Optical Image Stabilisation, and a 2.5" screen:

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9 ($400) may look like just another ultra-compact camera, but it's more than that. This camera actually has an optical image stabilizer inside the lens, which helps reduce the effects of "camera shake". The FX9 and its siblings plus the new Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 are the only compact cameras on the market with this very useful feature. Other nice things about the FX9 include its 6 Megapixel CCD, large 2.5" LCD display, AF-assist lamp, and VGA movie mode."

The camera is available in Black or Silver from Amazon.co.uk - you may also be pleased to know that Amazon.co.uk are also stocking the rest of the new Panasonic digital cameras.

Nikon D50 Digital SLR Review

Pocket-Lint review the new 6 megapixel Nikon D50 digital SLR:

"Anyone considering getting into digital SLR photography today, but lacks the budget of a top professional, now has more options than ever to choose between. Canon’s EOS 350D, Konica Minolta’s 5D entry and Pentax’s *ist DS are all ‘budget’ D-SLRs offering enthusiast snappers a previously undreamt-of-at-the-price range of kit."

Sony Cybershot M2 Announced

LetsGoDigital and DCViews have details of the new "2 in 1" Sony Cybershot M2 - a 5 megapixel digital camera, with a high quality MPEG4 movie mode, a 3x optical zoom lens and a 2.5" screen.

Canon Powershot SD500 / IXUS 700 Review

DesignTechnica review the 7 megapixel Canon Powershot SD500 / Digital IXUS 700:

"The SD500 is quite attractive with its brushed metal faceplate and silvery accents. It's nice but Canon rather pretentiously calls it a "Perpetual Curve Design." An industrial design icon from Raymond Loewy it certainly isn't but it's better than usual slab of plastic and metal foisted on the public and is much more attractive the previous ELPHs."

Read my review of the Canon Powershot SD500 / Digital IXUS 700 here.

Fuji Finepix A350 Review

Megapixel.net review the 5 megapixel Fuji FinePix A350 - it features a 3x optical zoom lens, and a 1.7" screen:

"A plump and user-friendly little compact, the recently released 5-megapixel FinePix A350 is one of 2 very similar cameras from Fujifilm. Intended as budget-conscious, entry-level cameras, the A350 and its twin, the 4-megapixel A345, are both equipped with a 3X optical zoom."

Read my review of the Fuji FinePix A350 here.

Olympus Mju Digital / Stylus 800 Review

DCResource have reviewed the new all-weather Olympus Mju Digital 800 / Stylus 800 - it features an 8 megapixel sensor, a 3x optical zoom lens and a 2.5" screen:

"The Olympus Stylus 800 ($399) is a compact, all-weather 8 Megapixel digital camera. Like the other cameras in the Stylus series, the Stylus 800 can take a splash of water and it can keep shooting. This doesn't mean that it can go swimming with you -- because it can't -- but a day at the beach is no problem. Other features on the Stylus 800 include a 3X optical zoom lens, large 2.5" LCD display, VGA movie mode, and limited manusal controls."

Sony Cybershot DSC-R1 Preview

DPReview have updated their preview of the new 10 megapixel Sony Cybershot DSC-R1 to include sample photos and test comparisons to a Canon Digital SLR.

Pentax Optio WP Review

LetsGoDigital review the 5 megapixel water proof Pentax Optio WP:

"The Pentax lets you shoot on a depth of 1.5 meters and the digital camera will keep up for 30 minutes (the so-called JIS class 8). Diving however still requires special housings, but the underwater function is great for the average snap shooter that wants to take pictures in and around the swimming pool. Also for those who want to keep on photographing in rainy weather."

Sony DSC-R1 Launch Event Review

DPNow have published a preview / review of the new 10 megapixel R1:

"Sony has certainly made another mark in digital camera history with the launch of the DSC-R1, a prosumer camera like no other. With Sony's recent declaration of intent to enter the Digital SLR race, in partnership with Konica Minolta, today's launch of the Sony DSC-R1 was a bit of a surprise as it's a camera to woo potential DSLR buyers away from a DSLR."

Sony Cybershot DSC-R1 Announced

Sony have announced the 10 megapixel Sony Cybershot DSC-R1 - it features a 5x optical zoom lens (wide angle), a 10 megapixel CMOS sensor (larger than normal), a 2" TFT tilt/swivel screen on top of the camera, manual zoom ring and focus ring and high ISO upto 3200!

Sony Cybershot DSC-S90 Review

DigitalCameraReview review the 4 megapixel Sony Cybershot DSC-S90:

"The image quality of the S90 surprised me. The camera handles low light well and the flash seems to be a lot more powerful than Sony claims. Indoor shots turned out well. The colors were accurate but maybe a tad too vibrant (see the macro flower shot below and the picture of John Deere tractors). In some shots, especially where the foreground and background were lit at different ends of the spectrum, the Sony had a little trouble with overexposure (see the grass i
