LCD or Optical Viewfinder - You Decide?

Canon IXUS 65Digital Cameras Blog spotted an article at The New York Times (subscription required) on the way we interact with digital cameras - it states that many people no longer want an optical viewfinder, and that many do not even realise it is there, instead preferring to use the LCD screen.

With LCD screens becoming ever bigger (the Canon IXUS 65 shown features a 3" screen and no optical viewfinder) the camera is being held further away, and therefore more likely to shake, causing blurry shots, on the other hand, how many people are can use the tiny optical viewfinders on many compact point and shoots? It's a hot topic, with many digital camera manufacturers simply removing the optical viewfinder in favour of a large screen, whilst others are debating whether they really need to keep the optical viewfinder. What do you want, a large LCD and no optical viewfinder, or a smaller screen and a bigger optical viewfinder?

I like optical viewfinders although the ones on digital cameras do not seem as accurate as those on film cameras. Bigger and more accurate optical viewfinders would be nice. In bright sunlight LCDs are virtually useless.

However LCDs are necessary to access all the various menus but if you are long-sighted, like I am, these are difficult to read no matter how big the screen, unless you put on your glasses. For this reason I find EVFs to be a good compromise. I can see the picture regardless of the brightness of the ambient light and I call also read the menus clearly!

I am looking forward to seeing the new OLED screens that are rumoured to be making an appearance next year. I may then have a different opinion.
