Nikon Coolpix S7, S7c, S8, S9 Announced

Nikon Coolpix S Series

Nikon have updated their Coolpix S series cameras with four new models - they are an upgrade to the Nikon Coolpix S6 reviewed here. They all feature a 3x optical zoom lens - the S7 features a 7 megapixel sensor, a 3" screen and Vibration Reduction, the S7c is black and adds wireless support, the S8 has a smaller 2.5" screen, and the S9 has the lowest specification with 6 megapixels, a 2.5" screen and no vibration reduction.

The Nikon S8 is just another upgraded cam with more features infused for conectivity. No improvements to the picture qualitys as with all S model nikon. At that price many other cams is better made and tailored to the consumers. Low lighting is a major weak point in the S series. Is good for a begainer or a lady who simply wants something small in the bag.

Even at 7mp it cannot out perform many market models who is just on 6mp. Too much of digital zoom induced in the nikon S seris. For a begainer or someone with now knowledge to photography is fine but not for people who is looking or an upgrade.

The camera simply has too much noice in the pictures. Panasonic FX7(like the 28mm wide), Canon Ixus seris, Olympus 760 or the 240 takes much better pictures.

For a little more green backs the older Panasonic LX-1 is truely a much better buy. 28mm ~ 112mm, True Optical zoom, full manual or auto, 8.3mp, takes RAW, 16:9 aspect ratio. No other compact comes close to it's features. The current running model LX-2 is an even hype & rave model. The compact that is worship and sort after by many who knows.

Nikon S7 ~ S9 model all suffers from their poor pictures when using higher ISO. Can be seen once picture is blown up. A3 printing not advisable. Nikons are still better in the DSLR market not in this compacts segments.

    Problems
My biggest concerns are image quality in low light conditions and electronic noise. As soon as the light gets dim, the image quality suffers significantly. The image sensor is very small, rather tiny and this causes a lot of noise - but I was surprised to see that much noise. 7Mpx sounds fine for a sensor but one can only benefit from it when there is enough light available. Another observation I made is that the AF works not too well if the light is low and/or the contrast of the center area is low as well. Some shots are slightly out of focus therefore because the AF auxiliary focussing light does not do the job perfect as it should.

As I said before - the camera is a very attractive nice little optical notebook which cannot replace a real camera at all.

As quote from another review site about the Nikon S range of compacts.
