Canon Digital IXUS 65 / SD630 Review

IXUS 65Trusted Reviews have posted their review of the new Canon Powershot SD630 / Digital IXUS 65 - the ultra compact 6 megapixel digital camera features a large 3" screen and a 3x optical zoom lens. The Canon Digital IXUS 65 is available for £169 from Amazon UK:

"The IXUS 65’s overall performance is exceptional. It starts up in about a second, wakes from standby in about the same, and in continuous shooting mode at maximum quality and image size it can rattle off an impressive two frames a second and keep it up until the memory card is full."

Olympus Mju Stylus 1000 Review

Olympus MJU 1000Pocket-Lint have reviewed the new top of the range Olympus Mju 1000 - it marks 10 years of Olympus digital cameras - and features a 10 megapixel sensor, a 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" screen, a stainless steel weatherproof body, and high ISO modes (ISO64 - 1600 at 10 megapixels, and upto ISO6400 at 3mp) to avoid image blur. It also has a new feature called "Perfect Fix" for correction of image blur, backlight (dynamic range), and red eye. The camera is available for £240 from Amazon:

"This is a camera that has an Achilles heel, one it has in common with almost all other 10-megapixel compacts. It is the sensor itself, which is just too small for the number of pixel it contains, cramming so many in means problems with noise, fringing and detail loss. Less is so much more (as evidenced by the recently reviewed Mju 725) in terms of detail and reduced noise problems."

Olympus Mju 725SW Review

Olympus Mju 725SWTrusted Reviews have reviewed the new Olympus Mju 725SW - the camera is an update to the waterproof and shockproof 720SW reviewed here - and now features 3 colours and can be used under water at depths upto 5m meters (the 720SW went upto 3m). The other features are the same: 7.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" screen and high ISO settings to avoid image blur. The 725SW is available in Blue, Cherry Red, and Grey for £225:

"In the official description of the mju 725 the shock-proofing is rated to “MIL Standard (MIL-STD 810F)” a complex and highly specific set of testing criteria published by the US military. I’ve had a look at the relevant section and apparently it means that the mju 725 SW can withstand momentary shocks of at least 1,000 G, about fifty times what the human body can withstand."

Olympus FE-200 Review

Olympus FE-200 TelephotoDigital Camera Review have reviewed the new top of the FE (Easy) range FE-200 - it features a wide-angle 5x optical zoom lens (28mm - 135mm), a 6 megapixel sensor, a 2.5" screen, a metal body and high ISO settings to avoid image blur. The camera should is available £145 from Amazon:

"While the wide angle, 5x optical zoom lens and 6 megapixel resolution is currently a kind of “sweet spot” in the current point and shoot market, the FE-200 doesn’t perform well enough to keep up with the competition. In addition, in my opinion, any price difference between this camera and a competitor, if there is any, is not enough to make the FE-200 any more attractive."

Nikon Coolpix S9 Review

Nikon Coolpix S9DPInterface have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix S9 - the ultra compact digital camera features a 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" screen and a 6 megapixel sensor. The camera is available for £146 from Amazon:

"The Nikon Coolpix S9 is a small, stylish and affordable camera. A 3X zoom lens is self-contained in the camera and the 2.5 inch LCD on the back offers good resolution and viewing. Unfortunately, that LCD previewing won't last long without a viewfinder and below average battery life."

Sony Cybershot DSC-N2 Review

Sony Cybershot DSC-N2DPInterface have published the first online review of the new 10 megapixel upgrade to the Sony Cybershot DSC-N1, it features a 3" touchscreen, a 3x optical zoom lens, ISO upto 1600, and a 300 shot battery life. The camera is available for £244 from Amazon:

"The Sony Cyber-shot N2 packs 10 megapixels and a huge touchscreen into its small casing. The rather powerful flash, manual controls and great movie mode also add the appeal of the N2 to the crowds. Despite offering more manual controls (over exposure) than your typical compact, the Sony N2 lacks custom white balance and has limited aperture options."

"The Olympus Mju 725SW might look a little pricey at £300 given its 7.1-megapixel resolution, but you’re getting an armour plated, Tonka-tough take anywhere camera built for any outdoor activity from snorkeling or skiing to rock climbing or hiking in torrential rain."

Leica Digilux 3 Digital SLR Review

Leica Digilux 3 DSLRDigital Camera Review have reviewed the new Leica Digilux 3 - a 7.5 megapixel digital SLR with realtime preview - it is based on the Panasonic Lumix L1 and uses the Four Thirds Standard - but with additional improvements by Leica.

"You may be thinking that you've seen this camera before. Don't worry, you're not going crazy. The Leica Digilux 3 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 digital cameras were jointly developed by Leica and Panasonic, so the feature sets of the cameras are very similar. They have different approaches regarding image processing, with each company having their own "take" on what their users are looking for. The 7.5 megapixel Leica Digilux 3 has a Four Thirds lens mount and comes with a nice Leica D Vario Elmarit 14-50mm/f2.8-3.5 lens."

Battery life is rated at 270 shots, the camera is 25mm thick, and weighs 150g. The IXUS 850 IS is available for £239 from Amazon UK.

Nikon D40 Digital SLR Review at DPReview

Nikon D40 Digital SLRDPReview have reviewed the new Nikon D40 Digital SLR, it features a 6 megapixel sensor, a new compact body (although it's not as small as the Olympus E-400), a 2.5" screen, ISO 200 - 1600, 2.5fps shooting, a near-instant startup of 0.18 seconds. It ships next month for $599 / £449(!), which should make it an appealing Christmas Digital SLR. It's available for pre-order from Amazon UK for £439 with kit lens.

"The Nikon D40 is an all new affordable, compact, point-and-shoot digital SLR from Nikon, it follows on from the D50 but at a significantly lower price point and with a subtly different feature set. The biggest news however is probably fact that Nikon resisted the temptation to keep chasing megapixels (hooray for that) and instead appear to have concentrated on what makes a good camera, a decent viewfinder, short shutter lag, very short viewfinder blackout."

Epson PictureMate 280 Photo Review

Epson PictureMate 280Photography BLOG have recently put several photo printers through their paces. The Epson PictureMate 280 (pictured), the HP Photosmart A618 and the Lexmark P350, they find the HP Photosmart A618 comes out on top, despite being the cheapest printer on test:

"If you can live with the over-saturated colours then the HP Photosmart A618 makes a great choice as a printer for all your family photos. Although the time taken per print is quite slow at around 1min 50 secs, the A618 works equally well in stand-alone mode or connected to a PC, unlike the Lexmark P350 that we recently reviewed."

Canon Powershot A640 Review at DPReview

Canon Powershot A640 A630DPReview have reviewed the new Canon Powershot A640 - it features a 4x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" swivel screen, optical viewfinder, ISO upto 800, take 4 AA batteries, new smart zoom and a 10 megapixel sensor. The Canon Powershot A640 is available for £215 from Amazon

"The PowerShot A640, launched in August, just before Photokina 06, replaces the popular A620 at the top of Canon's increasingly well-specified 'budget' A series range. The new model gets a bit of a facelift (and a new coat of black paint) as well as a bigger screen, major pixel boost (up from 7MP to 10MP) and a few feature tweaks."

Olympus SP-510 Ultra Zoom Review

Olympus SP-510UZCameras.co.uk have reviewed the new Olympus SP-510UZ - a 7.1 megapixel update to the Olympus SP-500UZ reviewed here. It features a silver body, a 10x optical zoom lens, and a 2.5" screen. It features new high ISO modes, a feature that was lacking in the SP-500, the ISO range is ISO50 upto ISO1600 at 7.1 megapixels, and upto ISO2500 / ISO4000 at 3mp. This should help avoid image shake when using the camera in low light or at the longer end of the zoom. Battery life if also improved. The camera is available for only £169 from Amazon

"In my view the Olympus SP-510 is let down by its picture quality. There are plenty of similar super zoom cameras to choose from and to be honest I would spend my money elsewhere."

Pentax K100D DSLRWe've just published our review of the new 6 megapixel Pentax K100D Digital SLR, it features a built in anti-shake CCD sensor, as found on the Konica Minolta Maxxum Dynax 5D and 7D, and the new Sony A100, this allows any lens used on the Digital SLR to benefit from anti-shake, allowing blur free low light or long zoom photos. The camera features a 2.5" screen. The K100D with kit lens is available for only £369 making it excellent value for money!

"Image quality is excellent, the images have very good colour, with good contrast and detail, with low noise except at the highest ISO settings (ISO1600 and ISO3200). Images were slightly smoothed but this is adjustable within the camera, and detail was very good. Purple fringing was very low with the kit lens, and red-eye was not a problem. The camera was very competent at focusing (except on very plain or dark surfaces)."

Nikon D40 Digital SLR Review at IR

Nikon D40 Digital SLRImaging Resource have reviewed the new Nikon D40 Digital SLR, it features a 6 megapixel sensor, a new compact body (although it's not as small as the Olympus E-400), a 2.5" screen, ISO 200 - 1600, 2.5fps shooting, a near-instant startup of 0.18 seconds. It ships next month for $599 / £449(!), which should make it an appealing Christmas Digital SLR. It's available for pre-order from Amazon UK for £439 with kit lens.

"The Nikon D40 is a natural fit in most hands. Its controls are where they should be for easy use, and the D40 is a well-behaved guest at parties with its pleasantly soft shutter sound. A big, bright LCD is great for reviewing photos from a wide variety of angles; though we do wish they'd put some kind of eye detection method to prevent glare while you're looking through the viewfinder."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01 Review

Trusted Reviews have reviewed the six megapixel Panasonic DMC FX01. This compact digital camera has a 3.2x optical zoom but what makes it stand out is that it is one of the few digital cameras to offer an ultra wide angle lens and this means the camera can shoot using 16:9 and 3:2 aspect ratios. This is great for photos of landscapes, buildings, interiors and groups of people as it lets you fit in that little bit more into the frame. The FX01 is available for £172 from Amazon

"With its wide angle lens and optical image stabilisation the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01 stands out from the crowd of virtually identical 6-megapixel 3x zoom ultra-compacts. It is well made, looks superb and takes very good pictures, with excellent noise control and good low light performance. All in all, a pleasant, simple elegant camera that’s perfect for social snapshot photography."

Olympus SP-510 Ultra Zoom Review at IR

Olympus SP-510UZImaging Resource have reviewed the new Olympus SP-510UZ - a 7.1 megapixel update to the Olympus SP-500UZ reviewed here.

"Though long-time users of Olympus cameras might be more forgiving of some of the quirks on the Olympus SP-510 UZ, I struggled with this camera when shooting in anything but the most ideal of circumstances. While this 7 megapixel camera offers light sensitivity settings of up to ISO 4,000, image resolution drops to 3 megapixels when shooing at ISO 2,500 and above."

Canon Digital IXUS i7 Zoom First Thoughts

Canon Digital IXUS i7 Zoom

The Canon Digital IXUS i7 Zoom (aka Powershot SD40) - pictured above* in Blue - only £166 from Amazon UK - it seems to be excellent value for money. The camera has 7.1 megapixels, a 2.4x optical zoom lens, a 1.8" screen, VGA video at 30fps, is ultra compact and made out of metal, it comes with a docking station, a remote control, and is available in four colours. However it doesn't come with a case, so I bought the Leather Hama Arezzo Photo DF10 Camera bag (pictured behind the i7) from Asda for £10. It was the smallest camera case they had!

The Digital IXUS i7 Zoom is, in my opinion, the modern day version of the Sony Cybershot DSC-L1, which Sony discontinued in favour of ultra-slim digital cameras with large 2.5 or 3-inch screens (they can't fit screens this big on cameras the size of the i7 Zoom). When it comes to ultra-compact digital cameras, I'm a BIG fan of these "chocolate bar" sized digital cameras such as the Canon Digital IXUS i7 Zoom, and Sony DSC-L1 (even though mine broke).

I remember paying £125 in March 2004 (less than 3 years ago) for a 3 megapixel Canon Powershot A300 that featured no optical zoom, a 1.5" screen, and a bulky body that's probably twice the size of the IXUS i7 Zoom. You get a lot for your money these days, although you still don't get a case with the camera - some things never change :)

Canon Powershot G7 Review

Canon Powershot G7Steves Digicams have reviewed the new Canon Powershot G7 - a 10 megapixel digital camera, it features a 6x optical zoom lens (35 mm film equivalent 35–210 mm) with optical image stabilisation (much like the recently announced Canon Powershot A710 IS), a 2.5" screen, face detection, ISO1600/3200, sound recording, an optical viewfinder, and a high resolution 1024 x 768 pixels (15 frames/sec.) video mode, as well as VGA / 30fps video mode. Battery life is rated as 220 shots, the camera measures 106.4 x 71.9 x 42.5 mm (4.2 x 2.8 x 1.7 in.) and weighs Approx. 320 g (11.3 oz.). The Canon Powershot G7 is available for £309 at Amazon

"I was very pleased with this latest addition to Canon's legendary "G" series line. While we miss the Vari-Angle LCD, the new 6x IS lens is a definite plus. The only negative issues we found were the problem with the optical viewfinder and the higher image noise at ISO 800 and 1600. That said, the G7 is a good choice for the beginner, novice, or enthusiast that wants a less bulky alternative to carrying around a dSLR and a bag of lenses."

Canon Digital IXUS i7 Zoom / SD40 Review

Canon IXUS i7Steves Digicams have reviewed the new ultra compact Canon Digital IXUS i7 / Powershot SD40 - it features a 7 megapixel sensor, a 1.8" screen, a 2.4x optical zoom lens, face-detection, ISO 1600, a DIGIC III processor, VGA / 30fps video mode, and will be available in four colours (Pink, Grey, Sepia, and Blue). Battery life is rated at 190 shots, the camera is 23.9mm thick and weighs 105g. The Canon Digital IXUS i7 is available for £164 from Amazon

"Bottom line - The Canon PowerShot SD40 Digital ELPH is an awesome pocket-sized digicam. That said, I feel it will make just about any user who wants an ultra-compact model, very happy by offering great image quality, robust performance, ease of use, and let's not forget the stylish and durable body that comes in four different colors."

Pentax K10D DSLR Review at DPReview

Pentax K10D DSlRDPReview have reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Pentax K10 Digital SLR - it features: Anti-shake CCD sensor (SR, Shake Reduction), Dust removal system for the sensor, a dust-proof, weather-resistant body, ISO upto 1600, 3fps, 2.5" screen, 500-shot battery life, optional battery grip, and takes SD memory cards. Available for £573 (body only), £661 (inc kit lens) or £750(with two kit lenses).

"Announced on September 14th 2006, just in time for Photokina 2006 the new K10D is Pentax's first foray into the serious-amateur digital SLR market. It's bigger, tougher and more feature rich than any Pentax digital SLR before it and it certainly carries a wide enough range of features to worry the 'big name' brands. Headline features include a stabilized ten megapixel CCD, high quality image processing pipeline, dust and weather proof seals, 11-point AF (with 9 cross-type points) and some unique exposure modes."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 DSLR Review

Panasonic Lumix L1LetsGoDigital have posted their review of the new 7.5 megapixel Panasonic Lumix L1 Digital SLR, it features a live-view, and a new Leica lens. The DMC-L1 with Leica lens is available for £1197 from Amazon.

"All in all, I took quite a liking to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1. It certainly is a cheeky camera with a number of equally cheeky quirks. If Panasonic manage to deal with these small issues, they will without question have a winner in hands. The challenge that Panasonic face is that they are yet to build their reputation as a DSLR manufacturer. However, the combination of the Panasonic L1 and the superior standard lens provides Panasonic with an impressive business card, which is always a great starting point."

Digital Cameras in 2006 at DPExpert

Fuji F30DPExpert have published a look back at the year 2006 - looking back at the progress made, and looking at the best digital cameras and digital camera accessories released. My vote goes to the 6 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F30 (pictured) - the best performing compact digital camera for low-light or indoor shots:

"Most camera companies appear to be in the grip of pixel madness and this year we have seen compact cameras that have had too many pixels for their own good. If there is one piece of advice that we can give from testing the 2006 crop it is this: 7 megapixels is enough for any compact camera. Above the pixel density image quality deteriorates."

Lensbaby 3G Review at TOP

Lensbaby 3GThe Online Photographer have published their review of the Lensbaby 3G - a unique SLR lens designed to give your photos a creative and artistic look.

"The new Lensbaby 3G is essentially a Lensbaby 2.0 that allows you to lock and finely adjust the focus and sweet spot orientation. There is a button on the top right that locks the lens into position, and two knobs on the bottom that act as a release. Three small circular knobs allow you to finely adjust focus once locked, and three thin metal threaded posts protrude from the front, allowing you to finely adjust the bend settings."

Canon Digital IXUS i7 SD40 Review

Canon IXUS i7DPInterface have reviewed the new ultra compact Canon Digital IXUS i7 / Powershot SD40 - it features a 7 megapixel sensor, a 1.8" screen, a 2.4x optical zoom lens, face-detection, ISO 1600, a DIGIC III processor, VGA / 30fps video mode, and will be available in four colours (Pink, Grey, Sepia, and Blue). Battery life is rated at 190 shots, the camera is 23.9mm thick and weighs 105g. The Canon Digital IXUS i7 is available for £164 from Amazon

"The Canon PowerShot SD40 Digital ELPH is a great camera at time when you don't want to lug that digital SLR around or even your mid-sized camera. It makes a good camera for those who want simple operation and a stylish camera."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 Review

Panasonic FZ50DPInterface have published their review of the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 - a 10 megapixel update to the FZ30 (read our review here) - it features a 12x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, and ISO uto 1600. It's available in black or silver. If you are looking for the ultimate ultra-zoom, then the FZ50, is pretty much it right now, and is available for £347 from Amazon:

"The Panasonic FZ50 is a high-end camera with a large stabilized zoom lens. It handles and feels like a digital SLR. To complement that experience, there's a powerful flash with a hotshoe, full manual controls and shooting modes, accessories, good battery life and RAW mode."

Olympus FE-190 Compact Digicam Review

Olympus FE-190Digital Camera Review have reviewed the new ultra-slim FE-190 - the FE-190 is just 18.8mm thick, and features a 6 megapixel sensor, a 3x optical zoom lens and a 2.5" screen. It uses high ISO settings to avoid image blur. The FE-190 is available for £130:

"The Olympus FE-190 is an easy to use, good looking, affordable camera. However, I don’t quite agree with all of the decisions that Olympus made to “strip down” the camera. For instance, you can’t adjust the sensitivity (ISO) or white balance, and you can’t even disable the digital zoom. Another area in which manufacturers like to cater to beginner users is to have features that allow you to do “fun” things with your images, like add frames, change colors, etc. With the FE-190, you can playback the images in a slideshow, but the only editing/enhancing things that you can do is to resize or rotate your image."

Pentax K100D Digital SLR Review at TR

Pentax K100D DSLRTrusted Reviews have reviewed the new 6 megapixel digital SLR, the Pentax K100D, it features a built in anti-shake CCD sensor, as found on the Konica Minolta Maxxum Dynax 5D and 7D (and the new Sony A100), this allows any lens used on the Digital SLR to benefit from anti-shake, allowing blur free low light or long zoom photos. The camera features a 2.5" screen. The K100D with kit lens is available for £369!

"It may be the cheapest DSLR on the market, but the Pentax K100D isn’t short of advanced features, performance or image quality, and can comfortably hold its own against the Nikon D40. Build quality, design and handling are all superb, and the Shake Reduction system is as good as any on the market. If you’re looking for a good entry-level DSLR with the option to build up a kit, then look no further."

Olympus E-400 Digital SLR Review

Olympus E-400 DSLRPocket Lint have reviewed the world's smallest and lightest 10 megapixel Digital SLR, the E-400, it's based on the 4/3rds Standard, and introduced two new smaller lenses: a Zuiko Digital 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 ED and a Zuiko Digital 40-150mm 1:4-5.6 ED. The camera features a 2.5" screen with 215,000 pixels, up to 3fps with a five image RAW buffer in burst mode shooting, anti-dust sensor, XD and CF memory card slots, 95% frame coverage, 0.92x magnification, ISO100 - 1600, measures 129.5mm (W) x 91mm (H) x 53mm (D) and weighs 380g (body only). The camera is currently only available in Europe and Asia. The E-400 with twin kit lens is available for around £750.

"In a camera replete with so much clever stuff, you’d be forgiven for expecting a much bigger device. Until you hold the camera however, it is not immediately apparent just how svelte the E400 really is. But one worry I have is the price; it is not svelte by any standard. The E400 twin lens kit it is to be sold in includes the lens tested here plus a very compact 40 to 150mm (80 to 300mm in 35mm terms) lens for around £850."

Nikon D80 Digital SLR Review at DCI

Nikon D80Digital Camera Info have reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D80 Digital SLR - the camera is available for £599 Body Only, or £778 with an 18-70mm kit lens, and £799 with an 18-135mm kit lens.

"The Nikon D80 is a 10.2-megapixel DSLR for just under $1,000. It's a successor to the 6.1-megapixel D70s, Nikon's wildly popular consumer model. It’s also competition for the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi, the Sony alpha A100, the Olympus EVOLT E-500 and the Pentax K10D. In other words, it’s in a crowded field, populated mainly with cameras that have advanced features like dust reduction and image stabilization. The D80 lacks both, yet costs more than its cohorts."

Pentax K10D DSLR Hands On Review

Pentax K10D DSlRLuminous-Landscape have reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Pentax K10 Digital SLR - it features: Anti-shake CCD sensor (SR, Shake Reduction), Dust removal system for the sensor, a dust-proof, weather-resistant body, ISO upto 1600, 3fps, 2.5" screen, 500-shot battery life, optional battery grip, and takes SD memory cards. Available for £573 (body only), £661 (inc kit lens) or £750(with two kit lenses).

"One can't really get the measure of a complex camera like the Pentax 10D after just a week of use and a few hundred frames. But, it didn't take me long to discover that this is a camera that the sophisticated user will find to be a pleasure to work with. Image quality is on a par with virtually anything else on the market, the camera is very feature rich, the price is right, and it therefore isn't a stretch to say that the K10D is probably the best value in a 10 Megapixel DSLR at this time."

Canon Powershot A710 IS Review

Canon Powershot A710 ISDPReview have reviewed the new 7 megapixel Canon Powershot A710 IS - an update to the Canon Powershot A700 - the A710 IS features the same 6x optical zoom lens and 2.5" screen, ISO upto 800, takes 2 AA batteries, but upgrades the sensor to 7 megapixels and adds optical image stabilisation. Other features include a smart zoom that makes sure image quality is maintined with using digital zoom. The A710 IS is available for £208 from Amazon UK:

"Even in the 'blink and you'll miss it' world of compact digital cameras the budget-priced 6x zoom lensed Canon PowerShot A700 was a short-lived model; announced late February and replaced in August by the camera on test here, the PowerShot A710 IS. Aside from a design facelift and a few feature tweaks the biggest - and most welcome - change is that the new model adds optical image stabilization, something we bemoaned the lack of on the A700."

Olympus Stylus Mju 740 Review at IR

Olympus Mju 740 SilverImaging Resource have published their review of the new Mju / Stylus 740 - the camera is an ultra-compact, weatherproof, digital camera with a 5x optical zoom lens (36mm - 180mm equiv.), a 2.5" screen, a 7.1 megapixel sensor and built in digital image stabilisation using high ISO modes (the 750 adds an anti-shake CCD sensor). The 740 is available in Pink / Red, Silver, and Blue, (for £196) and the 750 is available in Silver and Black (for around £215):

"While the Olympus Stylus 740's LCD menu system seems scattered (in nine positions, just like the control buttons) and hard to follow, the built-in help system is a good idea, even a great one. An option on the Mode dial, it lists situations and solutions as if they were options. As you dig through the menus, you find just the thing you want the camera to do -- and the OK button actually sets the camera up."

Pentax K100D Digital SLR Review at Wired

Pentax K100D DSLRWired have reviewed the new 6 megapixel digital SLR, the Pentax K100D, it features a built in anti-shake CCD sensor, as found on the Konica Minolta Maxxum Dynax 5D and 7D (and the new Sony A100), this allows any lens used on the Digital SLR to benefit from anti-shake, allowing blur free low light or long zoom photos. The camera features a 2.5" screen. The K100D with kit lens is available for £369!

"Pentax’s retro-cool K100D offers professional single-lens-reflex quality at a price any cub photographer can afford. In our tests, images shot at up to ISO 1600 were as blemish-free in low light as those produced by more-expensive SLRs. Color fidelity was excellent, too, except photos became reddish in very dark environments. And for beginners with a Spidey sensibility, the image sensor actually moves to counteract camera shake, making image-stabilizing lenses a thing of the past."

Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 Digital SLR Review

Sony Alpha DSLRMegapixel.net have published their review of the new Sony Alpha Digital SLR DSLR-A100 - it features a 10.2 megapixel sensor with anti-shake, now called Sony Steadyshot, an anti-dust sensor, a 2.5" screen with 230,000 pixels, and a Minolta lens mount. The camera is available for around $899/£480 body only, $999/£499 with kit lens, and £765 with the twin lens kit:

"The Sony Alpha 100 (aka DSLR-A100) is the first digital single lens reflex produced by Sony, and is the result of the company's acquisition of the digital imaging division of Konica Minolta; explaining the family resemblance between the Alpha 100 and the Dynax 5D."

Canon Powershot G7 Review at TR

Canon Powershot G7Trusted Reviews have reviewed the new Canon Powershot G7 - a 10 megapixel digital camera, it features a 6x optical zoom lens (35 mm film equivalent 35–210 mm) with optical image stabilisation (much like the recently announced Canon Powershot A710 IS), a 2.5" screen, face detection, ISO1600/3200, sound recording, an optical viewfinder, and a high resolution 1024 x 768 pixels (15 frames/sec.) video mode, as well as VGA / 30fps video mode. Battery life is rated as 220 shots, the camera measures 106.4 x 71.9 x 42.5 mm (4.2 x 2.8 x 1.7 in.) and weighs Approx. 320 g (11.3 oz.). The Canon Powershot G7 is available for £309 at Amazon

"While the G7 is unquestionably a superb camera, head and shoulders above anything else at the same size or price, the slower lens, smaller profile and lack of RAW mode will deter many potential buyers from trading in their G6. Instead of the best semi-pro camera on the market, Canon has produced a well specified general purpose camera that will appeal to the more ambitious casual user, rather than as an SLR-alternative for the serious hobbyist."

The DSLR-A100 is based heavily on the Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D and incorporates a higher resolution 10.2-megapixel image sensor, improved 40-segment metering, higher resolution 2.5-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus, and a new Anti Dust technology."

Nikon Coolpix L5 Review

Nikon Coolpix L5DCResource have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix L5 - the 7 megapixel camera features a 5x optical zoom lens with (optical) vibration reduction, and a 2.5" screen. The camera offers 250 shots with Ni-Mh rechargable batteries and upto 490 shots with Lithium batteries. The Coolpix L5 is available for £179 from Amazon UK:

"The Coolpix L5 ($299) is the top-end camera in Nikon's entry-level camera lineup. There's a Coolpix L6 out there, but it's not nearly as impressive as the L5, and here's why. For one, it has a big 5X lens in a body that normally would have a 3X lens. Second, it has optical image stabilization -- lens based -- so you can get sharp photos in situations with less-than-desirable light. Other features include a 7.2 Megapixel CCD, 2.5" LCD display, numerous scene modes, and a VGA movie mode."

Nikon Coolpix L5 Review

Nikon Coolpix L5Photography BLOG have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix L5 - the 7 megapixel camera features a 5x optical zoom lens with (optical) vibration reduction, and a 2.5" screen. The camera offers 250 shots with Ni-Mh rechargable batteries and upto 490 shots with Lithium batteries. The Coolpix L5 is available for £179 from Amazon UK:

"As we reach the end of 2006, entry-level digital cameras are cheaper and offer more features than ever before, with prices squeezed by the growing popularity of DSLRs. The Nikon Coolpix L5 is a new compact digital camera aimed squarely at the point and shoot user, but which still has a number of advanced features, including a 5x zoom lens equivalent to 38-190mm and a Vibration Reduction mode for shake-free pictures."

Samsung GX-1L Digital SLR Review

Samsung DSLRTrusted Reviews have reviewed Samsung's second Digital SLR, the GX-1L, it features 8 scene modes, a 6 megapixel sensor, and a 2.5" screen, and is based on the Pentax *ist DL2:

"Like its identical twin the Pentax *ist DL2, the Samsung GX 1L is a well-priced entry-level DSLR that combines the ease of use of a compact with the performance and picture quality of an SLR. It may lack some more advanced features, but it has all the important ones. Experienced users may find its simplicity a little restrictive, but it is a perfect camera for the beginner who wants to learn, or for those making the switch from compact to SLR."

Ricoh Caplio 500G Wide Review

Ricoh 500GPocket-Lint have published their review of the new Ricoh Caplio 500G Wide. The camera is an 8 megapixel ruggedised water, dust and shockproof digital camera - it features a wide angle 3x optical zoom lens (28-85mm equivalent) and anti-blur mode using high ISO settings (upto 1600), as found on the Ricoh Caplio GX8, and Ricoh GR Digital.

"The Ricoh Caplio 500G Wide provides a tough package in terms of build, ease of use and versatility. Image quality is good thanks to a nice lens, fast, accurate focusing and good metering with the caveat on image noise at higher sensitivities."

The EasyShare C433 has 4 effective megapixels on a 1/2.5-inch CCD, a 3x optical zoom lens, 1.8-inch LCD screen, 16 MB of internal memory, and offers manual control over exposure, ISO and white balance presets."

Leica M8 Digital Rangefinder Review

Leica M8 Rangefinder in BlackThe Online Photographer have posted an early review of the new 10 megapixel Leica M8 Digital Rangefinder, available in Black or Black and Silver, the Leica M8 is Leica's first digital rangefinder. It features a 2.5" screen, and has a number of lenses and accessories available for it.

"On a tripod, writing to a raw file and converted in Phase One Capture One, the files are revealing themselves to be among the best I’ve ever worked with. They require little in the way of tonality adjustments, and way less sharpening than my Canon 1Ds Mk. II files. The only work so far is all color related. Color balance out of the box is not as guaranteed bulletproof as the Canon 5D. This will change with time and updates. I can live with it easily."

Olympus Mju Stylus 1000 Review

Olympus MJU 1000Trusted Reviews have reviewed the new top of the range Olympus Mju 1000 - it marks 10 years of Olympus digital cameras - and features a 10 megapixel sensor, a 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" screen, a stainless steel weatherproof body, and high ISO modes (ISO64 - 1600 at 10 megapixels, and upto ISO6400 at 3mp) to avoid image blur. It also has a new feature called "Perfect Fix" for correction of image blur, backlight (dynamic range), and red eye. The camera is available for £230 from Amazon:

"The Olympus mju 1000 is a camera with some very good points offset by some rather bad ones. It is about average for 10MP compacts in terms of picture quality, with good colour and exposure but poor noise control and some optical problems. Build quality, weatherproof durability, performance and ease of use are all good, but let down by poor low light focusing."

It has a new feature called "Intelligent ISO Control". The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX50 is available for £229 from Amazon:

Pocket-Lint have reviewed the new Kodak Easyshare Z710 - the camera features a 10x optical zoom lens, a 7.1 megapixel sensor, and a 2.0" screen. The camera is available for 200GBP.

"The camera’s resolution should allow prints up to A3 but there simply is not enough detail to support such a size, add to that some barrel distortion at the wide end of the zoom and purple fringing around high-contrast areas and I have to say that I cannot recommend this camera."

Olympus Mju Stylus 730 Review

Olympus Mju 730Digital Camera Review have reviewed the new Olympus Mju / Stylus 730 - it features a large 3" screen, a slim weatherproof body, a 3x optical zoom lens, and a 7.1 megapixel sensor. The camera also features high ISO settings to avoid image blur and, uniquely, buttons that light up on the back. Check for latest prices here:

"Whenever someone is looking for weatherproof camera, an Olympus Stylus model always gets a mention. Not only are they protected against the elements (with rubber gaskets), but they’re very stylish, sturdy and compact. Image quality on the Stylus 730 was good, and in my opinion, slightly better than the Stylus 750 and Stylus 1000."

Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd / S6500fd Review

Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd S6000fdThinkCamera have reviewed the new compact ultra zoom - the Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd / S6000fd Zoom. The new camera replaces the Fujifilm FinePix S5600 / S5200 - and features a 6 megapixel Super CCD sensor with ISO upto 3200, a wide-angle 10.7x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 28 - 300mm), a 2.5" screen, face-detection focus, and a rubberised black body. The camera is available for £249

"If I wanted to buy a bridge camera right now I'd get a Fujifilm S6500fd. If I wanted to buy a budget DSLR with a travel zoom then I'd also think long and hard about whether the S6500fd wasn't a better choice. It's between £50 and £100 cheaper than the S9600 and unless you need the extra pixels I think it's a better buy. It will also save you £100 - £200 off the price of an entry level DSLR and be somewhat easier to live with."

Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd S6000fdDPReview have reviewed the new compact ultra zoom - the Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd / S6000fd Zoom. "The new model has several key features of interest; top of the list being the 6.3MP, 1/1.7" Super CCD sensor used to wide acclaim in the F30 and F31fd and offering 'full resolution' shooting at up to ISO 3200. The S6000fd (known as the S6500fd in Europe) also has a different lens to its recent predecessors, sporting what appears to be the same 28-300mm equivalent 10.7x zoom as the S9100/9600."

Pentax K10D Review at ePhotoZine

ePhotoZine have reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Pentax K10 Digital SLR - it features: Anti-shake CCD sensor (SR, Shake Reduction), Dust removal system for the sensor, a dust-proof, weather-resistant body, ISO upto 1600, 3fps, 2.5" screen, 500-shot battery life, optional battery grip, and takes SD memory cards. Available for £573 (body only), £661 (inc kit lens) or £750(with two kit lenses).

"With the possible exception of frame rate, made up for in part with the Shake-reduction and dual RAW capability, this camera is up there with Nikon’s D200 and Canon’s 30D. Packed with features that have been well thought out and are easily accessible in a body that has been built to withstand the pressures of hard use in typically English climates it has a lot going for it."

Nikon Coolpix S10 Review at IR

Nikon Coolpix S10Imaging Resource have published their review of the new Nikon Coolpix S10 - an update to the Nikon Coolpix S4 - it features a 6 megapixel sensor, a swivelling body/lens design, a 10x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" screen, ISO upto 800, and newly developed vibration reduction CCD sensor. The Coolpix S10 is available for £223 from Amazon:

"The 10x Nikkor zoom lens makes the Nikon Coolpix S10 an exceptional swivel. It does exhibit some chromatic aberration at both wide and telephoto ends of the zoom range, but we thought it was kept under control, probably thanks to Nikon's use of ED glass in the Coolpix S10. ISO 800 shots were only usable at 4x6, but the ISO 50 shots were quite good at 11x14."

Olympus FE-190 Review at Steves Digicams

"Like we saw with the FE-140, the quality of our SHQ images isn't quite up to par with similar 6-megapixel entry-level models. While the majority of our outdoor samples show good exposure and have good center sharpness, there's above average edge softness and image noise."

Canon Powershot A700 Review On-Line

Canon Powershot A700We've just published our review of the new Canon Powershot A700, it features a 6x optical zoom lens, although unfortunately it doesn't feature image stabilisation. It also features a 6 megapixel sensor, a 2.5" screen, 11 scene modes, VGA videos with sound, ISO upto 800, and a 16:9 aspect ratio shooting mode. Find out how it performed in our review:

"I've been using the Canon Powershot A700 for nearly 6 months now and taken thousands of photos with it - this camera has consistently produced excellent results and been able to take great photos in every situation, including WWE shows! Image quality is excellent with great colours, and the 6x optical zoom lens is an excellent feature, especially as the camera is not much bigger than a lot of other 3x optical zoom lens cameras."

Nikon D80 DSLR Review at Trusted Reviews

Nikon D80Trusted Reviews have reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D80 Digital SLR - the camera is available for £599 Body Only, or £778 with an 18-70mm kit lens, and £799 with an 18-135mm kit lens.

"The D80 is another superb camera in Nikon’s increasingly impressive DSLR range. It is expensive and complicated, but it is also extremely well made, incredibly versatile and capable of fantastic picture quality. However it is surrounded by some very strong competition most of which is equipped with shake reduction, and although it may be one of the best 10MP cameras so far, it is not necessarily the best value for money."

Nikon D40 DSLR Review by Ken Rockwell

Nikon D40 Digital SLRKen Rockwell has reviewed the new Nikon D40 Digital SLR, it features a 6 megapixel sensor, a new compact body (although it's not as small as the Olympus E-400), a 2.5" screen, ISO 200 - 1600, 2.5fps shooting, a near-instant startup of 0.18 seconds. It ships next month for $599 / £449(!), which should make it an appealing Christmas Digital SLR. It's available for pre-order from Amazon UK for £449 with kit lens.

"I'm suggesting the D40 to my friends who just want great pictures of family, kids and friends. The D40 is for normal people who just want great pictures, not photographers who want fancy cameras. The D40 is the smallest and lightest Nikon DSLR ever."

Nikon D80 DSLR Review at Think Camera

Nikon D80Think Camera have reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D80 Digital SLR - the camera is available for £599 Body Only, or £778 with an 18-70mm kit lens, and £799 with an 18-135mm kit lens.

"All in all the D80 is an excellent traveling companion. It has a solid feel and strong body build, yet is not a drag on your shoulder or pack. Just about everything you need for field work is accessible right from the body, with the menu offering other layers of goodies. At 10+ megapixels it certainly delivers enough resolution for large-scale prints, and the color rendition and sharpness out of the box is excellent."

Pentax K100D Digital SLR Review

Pentax K100D DSLRDPReview have reviewed the new 6 megapixel digital SLR, the Pentax K100D, it features a built in anti-shake CCD sensor, as found on the Konica Minolta Maxxum Dynax 5D and 7D (and the new Sony A100), this allows any lens used on the Digital SLR to benefit from anti-shake, allowing blur free low light or long zoom photos. The camera features a 2.5" screen. The K100D with kit lens is available for £500:

"The K100D and K110D digital SLRs were announced in May 2006, aimed as a straight replacement for the *ist DS series (actually the DS2) these two SLRs are designed to appeal to the affordable end of the digital SLR market but don't compromise on features. The only difference between the K100D and K110D are that the K100D includes Pentax's own CCD-shift type 'Shake Reduction' system, where as the K110D does not."

Nikon D80Shutterbug have reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D80 Digital SLR - the camera is available for £599 Body Only, or £778 with an 18-70mm kit lens, and £799 with an 18-135mm kit lens.

Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd S6000fd Review

Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd S6000fdImaging Resource have reviewed the new compact ultra zoom - the Fujifilm FinePix S6500fd / S6000fd Zoom. The new camera replaces the Fujifilm FinePix S5600 / S5200 reviewed here - and features a 6 megapixel Super CCD sensor with ISO upto 3200, a wide-angle 10.7x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 28 - 300mm), a 2.5" screen, face-detection focus, and a rubberised black body. The camera is available for £249

"For users who are considering a digital SLR but aren't quite ready to take the plunge, the Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd offers a compelling argument for staying with an all-in-one. From a distance -- and even from up close, actually -- it's easy to mistake the Fuji S6000fd for a digital SLR, though the camera's 10.71x (28 - 300mm) lens is not detachable. Nice touches like a rubberized ring-grip around the lens and full manual zoom control via the barrel give this camera a professional feel."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 DSLR Review

Panasonic Lumix L1PopPhoto have posted their review of the new 7.5 megapixel Panasonic Lumix L1 Digital SLR, it features a live-view, and a new Leica lens. The DMC-L1 is available for £1197 from Amazon.

"With its excellent stabilized zoom lens, live preview, and bright-image DOF capability, the L1 offers some significant benefits over most other DSLRs. Is it worth the $1,900 price tag? If you subtract the value of the Leica 14-50mm stabilized lens, you're getting a well-built DSLR with a dual-position pop-up flash, tons of controls, and Extremely High image quality at most ISO speeds for only about $600. Try to beat that!"

Nikon D40 Digital SLR Review

Nikon D40 Digital SLRDCResource have reviewed the new Nikon D40 Digital SLR, it features a 6 megapixel sensor, a new compact body (although it's not as small as the Olympus E-400), a 2.5" screen, ISO 200 - 1600, 2.5fps shooting, a near-instant startup of 0.18 seconds. It ships next month for $599 / £449(!), which should make it an appealing Christmas Digital SLR. It's available for pre-order from Amazon UK for £449 with kit lens.

"If you're ready to enter the world of digital SLRs, the Nikon D40 is a great way to do it. It offers a compact, truly portable body, great performance and photo quality, and a really user friendly interface for not a lot of dough. I can recommend the D40 without hesitation. I would say that the Canon Digital Rebel XTi is a somewhat more capable camera, but it also costs nearly $200 more."

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi 400D Review

Canon EOS 400DPhotography BLOG have reviewed the new 10 megapixel Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Enthusiast Kit - it features a new dust reduction system, similar to the one featured on all Olympus Digital SLRs, 3fps shooting, ISO100 to ISO1600, 500 shot battery life, and a 2.5" screen. The camera is available in Silver or Black for £480/$899 with kit lens:

"There is no doubt that this camera will sell by the bucket-loads and any consumer wanting to take their first step into DSLR ownership won't go far wrong with this DSLR, but while the 400D offers a good all round performance, it is no longer top of the class."

Olympus E-400 Digital SLR Review

Olympus E-400 DSLRePhotoZine have reviewed the world's smallest and lightest 10 megapixel Digital SLR, the E-400, it's based on the 4/3rds Standard, and introduced two new smaller lenses: a Zuiko Digital 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 ED and a Zuiko Digital 40-150mm 1:4-5.6 ED.

"With lots of picture modes and a generally simplified body control system, this is a DSLR that beginners can pick up and use. It produces very good results, and with a high 10Mp resolution can equally be used for landscapes and portraits. The autofocus is fast and accurate, but lacks sophisticated tracking and selection options. The ISO range is decent, but gets very noisy at 1600, even with noise reduction."

Olympus E-400 DSLR

We've updated our review of the world's smallest and lightest 10 megapixel Digital SLR, the E-400, to include pictures of the E-400 next to the Pentax K100D. Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 Review

Panasonic LX2Digital Camera Info have published their review of the new 10 megapixel Panasonic Lumix LX2 - it's an update to the Panasonic Lumix LX1 (read our review here) - and features a wide angle 4x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, ISO upto 1600, and a new larger 2.8" 16:9 wide LCD screen. It's available in black or silver. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 is available for £272 at Amazon UK

"Coming on the heels of its release of the LX1, the first digital camera to shoot 16:9 wide-angle aspect ratio natively in addition to 4:3 and 3:2, Panasonic brought the DMC-LX2 into the market earlier this year with a few notable improvements over its predecessor. Panasonic put an improved Venus Engine III processor in this camera in an attempt to battle noise concerns that arose with the LX1. This processor is also being credited with cutting down on battery consumption, with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 purportedly capable of attaining 300 shots on a single battery charge."

Canon Powershot G7 Review at DPExpert

Canon Powershot G7DPExpert have reviewed the new Canon Powershot G7 - a 10 megapixel digital camera, it features a 6x optical zoom lens (35 mm film equivalent 35–210 mm) with optical image stabilisation (much like the recently announced Canon Powershot A710 IS), a 2.5" screen, face detection, ISO1600/3200, sound recording, an optical viewfinder, and a high resolution 1024 x 768 pixels (15 frames/sec.) video mode, as well as VGA / 30fps video mode. Battery life is rated as 220 shots, the camera measures 106.4 x 71.9 x 42.5 mm (4.2 x 2.8 x 1.7 in.) and weighs Approx. 320 g (11.3 oz.). The Canon Powershot G7 is available for £309 at Amazon

"This camera is a joy to use, except for the absence of the swivelling LCD screen which is incredibly useful. But the images are disappointing. The pixel madness has Canon in its grip -- this is the second camera from the company that has disappointed by its excess pixel-induced image degradation. And to think that nine months ago Canon announced that the pixel race was over."
