DCResource have reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon Powershot A720 IS - an update to the A710 and A700 - it features a 6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, a 2.5" screen, DIGIC III processor, and ISO upto 1600. The A720 IS is available for £139:

"Overall, I was very pleased with the photo quality on the PowerShot A720. It took well exposed photos, with pleasing saturated colors. Photos are sharp, and details aren't smudged like on some cameras (Canon goes fairly easy on the noise reduction). Noise levels are quite reasonable when the lighting is good, up until ISO 400. I do wish that the A720's low light ISO performance was a bit better, though. Purple fringing was minimal on the camera."

"Now the good news. The image quality delivered by the A460 defies any preconceptions about small sensor size, entry-level cameras, or price. Except for the Super Macro mode (which is quite bad), my images from the A-460 were quite pleasing: sharp, well-exposed (especially with a -0.3 EV compensation applied), with good colors. At the wide-angle end, the lens suffers from considerable barrel distortion."

Sony Cybershot DSC-S730 Announced

Sony have announced the new value digital camera - the Sony Cybershot DSC-S730 - it features a 7.2 megapixel sensor, 2.4" screen, ISO upto 1250, 3x optical zoom lens, and on-screen function guide, and 440 shot battery life (with optional NH batteries). The camera will be available in January 2008:

Ricoh Caplio RR770 Announced

Ricoh announced (22/11/07) the new Ricoh Caplio RR770 - it features a 7 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, and 3" screen, 5cm macro, and 32mb of internal memory. The camera should be available in December 2007 at £89.99 inc vat.

The A700 features a 12.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, alpha lens mount, a weather resistant body, super steady shot (anti-shake sensor), dust reduction system, 5fps, 11 point focus, 3" screen, and dynamic range optimiser. "One thing that is clear when you start shooting with the A700 is that Sony has worked hard on performance; it feels very responsive, button presses for menus or image playback occurring instantly and there's no feeling of lag when changing settings. Other performance criteria such as continuous shooting speed, buffering and write speeds were all very good, with a pretty blazing 34 MB/sec write speed with SanDisk Extreme IV cards."

Nikon D40x Digital SLR Sample Photos

A while ago I mentioned a road trip to Rome with the Nikon D40x DSLR. Well, I've finally uploaded several sample photos, and as a Christmas bonus, I've even included some custom wallpapers!

The new Nikon D40x Digital SLR is a 10 megapixel update to the Nikon D40, it features the same compact body, a 2.5" screen, and adds a 10 megapixel sensor, ISO 100 - 1600, and 3fps shooting, it has a near-instant startup of 0.18 seconds. The D40x is available for £397 with kit lens.
