Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro Digital SLR Review

Fujifilm S5 ProThe Online Photographer have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro - an update to the S3 Pro, it offers increased dynamic range, a new RP (Real Photo) Processor Pro for "film-like" results, ISO100 - ISO3200, durable metal alloy body frame, face-detection, and three new film simulation modes. The S5 Pro is available for £840 without lens:

"The dynamic range advantage of the S5 is real and enough to make a substantial difference in use. The S5 still can’t match the recording capabilities of black and white negative film. But unlike the K110D, I found its yield of usable exposures high enough to make it viable as a tool for general snapshooting."

I've done some fairly rigorous tests with B&W film (Delta 100), and I am amazed at how well my film scanner (Canonscan FS4000 US) handles an extreme negative density range, as you long as you configure the scanner software (I use VueScan) correctly. An alternative to working through the scanner software is to work on the raw file directly in Photoshop. Whatever you do, make sure your black point is 0.00 and your white point is 0.01 or less.
