Best Digital Cameras of 2008

DigiCamReview Best of 20082008 has certainly been an interesting year with literally hundreds of new cameras released - the majority of them all feature the same boring specifications - a standard 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5" screen, and about 8 megapixels - but if you look closely you will find the gems - increasing numbers of cameras now feature a wide angle lens, optical image stabilisation, HD video recording, and extended optical zoom. The best example of this, and in our opinion, the best digital camera of 2008, is...

Panasonic TZ5The Panasonic Lumix TZ5 - it scores highly on all aspects, it offers 9 megapixels, a wide angle 10x optical zoom lens, a large 3" screen, a compact pocketable metal body, and optical image stabilisation, not only that but offers high definition video recording with optical zoom and image stabilisation. This would all be useless unless the camera backed this up with good image quality, and thankfully this camera provides that with good detail and great colour. If you had to buy only one camera this year, or indeed next, then the Panasonic Lumix TZ5 would be our choice. Read our Panasonic Lumix TZ5 Review for more information - the TZ5 is available for £176.

Olympus Micro Four Thirds PrototypeUnfortunately this camera system won't be available till next year, but should revolutionise the digital camera market by providing an interchangeable lens camera with the dimensions of a serious compact camera! Of course I'm talking about the Olympus Micro Four Thirds Prototype. Full details can be found here when we had a look at Photokina.

Other great Digital Cameras of 2008:

Fuji F100fdFor the lowest noise in a compact camera and great detail, the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd has to be commended - it takes great 12 megapixel photos, features a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens and has a compact metal body, if only it had full manual controls and a better menu system and it might have been featured above. Canon Powershot SX10 IS Review

Canon Powershot SX10 ISLetsGoDigital have reviewed the Canon Powershot SX10 IS, it has a wide angle 20x optical zoom lens, optical image stabilisation, ISO1600, a 10 megapixel CCD sensor, VGA video recording, and a swivel 2.5" screen. The camera is available for £253

"Other than that, the Canon PowerShot is a strong candidate to be the overall winner of the current Megazoom cameras. For now, the choice is up to the end user. And fair is fair; the technical lab tests merciless show the weak spots of a camera. It doesn’t always have to be like that in practice, since shooting conditions do differ vastly. The overall picture quality is of a high level and the Canon SX10 IS offers excellent users ease, as well as a swift response and is an ideal all-round camera."

Nikon Coolpix S60 Review

Nikon Coolpix S60NeoCamera have reviewed the new ultra compact Nikon Coolpix S60 - it features a huge 3.5" touchscreen, a 10 megapixel sensor with anti-shake, a 5x optical zoom lens, smile shutter, and HDMI connectivity. The S60 is available in a choice of Purplish Black, Pearl White, Bordeaux Red, Red, Pale Pink, or Rich Gold for £226:

"As an ultra-compact digital camera, the Nikon Coolpix S60 lives in the category with the most models. Luckily, this model does several things to distinguish itself. To start, its 3.5" LCD is the largest which can fit in an ultra-compact. Add a non-protruding slightly wide 5X optical zoom lens with stabilization and the S60 shows itself as a unique offering. The cost of this uniqueness is a touch-screen interface which can frustrate users trying to use the camera beyond pointing and shooting."

Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd Review

Fuji S8100fdCameras.co.uk have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd - an update to the S8000fd - it features a new 10 megapixel sensor, a wide angle 18x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" screen, high ISO settings, anti-shake sensor, and is available for £146

"The Finepix S8100 is a good all round super zoom camera. It does not have quite the same number of advanced features that some super zoom cameras offer. This is reflected in the price and you should find this camera a bit cheaper than the top of the range models from Canon, Sony and Panasonic."

Prosumer Digital Camera Group Review

Panasonic TZ5DPReview have reviewed several prosumer cameras including the Canon SX110 IS, and the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 - the camera features a wide angle 28mm 10x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, 9 megapixel sensor, and 3.0" screen. The camera will be available in March in silver, black, and blue. The TZ5 also features Digital Red-eye Correction, and is available for £175

"The TZ5 ticks so many boxes that you can forgive its rather unimpressive pixel-level image quality - and to be honest you won't even see it in normal prints. The standout feature is the excellent and truly versatile 28-280mm zoom lens, but on its own that wouldn't be enough to win our love; it's the whole package that works so well: the stylish, pocketable casing, the reliable automatic systems, the clean, logical user interface and the keen pricing."

Sony Alpha A300 Digital SLR Review

Sony A300Photography BLOG have reviewed the new 10 megapixel Sony Alpha A300 Digital SLR - the camera features a live view 2.7" swivel screen, in body image stabilisation, anti-dust sensor coating, ISO3200, 3fps shooting, and dynamic range optimisation. The camera is available for £378 with lens:

"The Sony A300 is certainly a fun camera to use, owing to its zippy Live View performance, tilting screen and advanced feature set. While plastic, it is well made, looking and feeling like it was built to last. The control interface is largely intuitive and easy to use, although allow yourself a bit of time to get used to it if you are switching from another brand."

Samsung TL34HD NV100HD Review

Samsung NV34HDPhotography BLOG have reviewed the new 14.7 megapixel digital camera called the NV100HD / TL34HD, with a wide angle 3.6x optical zoom lens, and 3" touch screen. The NV100HD is available for £169

"While the Samsung NV100HD’s retro looks and slightly fiddly touch screen operation may attract and repulse in equal numbers, its solidly constructed feel and reasonably well exposed images straight out of the camera should mean there’s little in the way of post processing needed by those looking to avoid hours slumped in front of a computer screen. Along as you like a well saturated, sharpened look to your images that is."

Pentax Optio M60 Review

Pentax Optio M60Trusted Reviews have reviewed the new Pentax Optio M60 - a compact 10 megapixel camera with a 5x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" screen and face recognition. The camera is available in silver, black, blue and red for £105

"The Pentax M60 shows that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a decent camera. While it does have its limitations, for £100 it offers excellent build quality, great handling, a wonderfully easy-to-use interface and some fun features. Unfortunately its low price shows in its slow performance and poor overall image quality."

Sony Cybershot DSC-T77 Review

The DSC-T77 camera replaces the former T70 model and is available in brown, green, pink, black and silver for £166

"The casual photographer will appreciate this slim camera for its fun touchscreen and vibrant color. It's easy to take along and fun to shoot with. You don't pay too dearly for the subcompact size, as images are of good quality, and Sony's image-enhancement features, like Dynamic Range Optimization, help improve your results in tough situations."

The camera is available from Amazon.

"I was initially so blown away by the resolution of this camera that little voices of doubt about the comparative value of my medium format gear began whispering in my ear. Could it be that I didn’t really need that expensive Mamiya/Phase system for landscapes?"

Canon Powershot A1000 IS Review

Canon Powershot A1000 ISDPInterface have reviewed the new Canon Powershot A1000IS - the 10 megapixel camera is an update to the A580 and features a 4x optical zoom with optical IS, 17 shooting modes including Easy Mode, Face Detection Technology, Auto Red-Eye Correction, Motion Detection Technology, 2.5” LCD and Optical viewfinder, it takes AA batteries and is available in blue, brown or silver for £109:

"The Canon PowerShot A1000 is a nice addition to Canon’s entry-level line of cameras. It’s just like the A2000 I reviewed, with a smaller 4X lens, screen size and the addition of an optical viewfinder. The main features of the camera are its 10 megapixel resolution, 4X zoom lens, 2.5 inch LCD and very good battery life."

Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR Review

Canon EOS 50DDigital Photography School have reviewed the new Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR - an update to the 40D - it features a new 15.1 megapixel sensor, 6.3fps shooting, Canon’s latest DIGIC 4 image processor, ISO upto 12800, 3" screen with live view, sensor cleaning, 9 point AF, and face detection. Body only is available for £875:

"Is there anything that I didn’t like about the Canon 50D? I honestly don’t think so. It takes an amazing photo, It’s a great size for my hands and the way I handle a camera - I am very big on that one, lots of people may have narrowed a new camera choice down to “this Canon or that Nikon…etc” but one thing I find that people don’t do is to go into a shop and physically hold the cameras in this, the day and age of “online shopping”."

TestFreaks Best Entry Level DSLR Cameras 2008

Canon EOS 450DTestFreaks have scored the Best Entry Level Digital SLR Cameras of 2008 - including the Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi - a 12.2 megapixel update to the 400D - it features 3.5fps shooting, live view shooting, 9 point AF, 3" screen, SD memory card support, and Canon's dust reduction system. The 450D Body only is priced at £389, the EOS 450D with 18-55mm IS kit is £438.

"This time we’re taking a look at what the users and experts voted as the best digital cameras (Entry Level type DSLR cameras) in 2008. There’s no brand winner this year really, as it’s sort of one from everybody in the top five. We’ll start with number one this time, it’s kind of no surprise either, Canon makes some excellent cameras. The number one camera of 2008 is the Canon EOS Rebel XSI 450D - Average Expert 8,4 (41 experts) Average User 9.2 (915 users)"

Continue reading the Best Entry Level DSLRs of 2008 by TestFreaks

Canon EOS 450DNearly five years have come and gone since the Canon company introduced their very first truly affordable SLR, at the time, the EOS 300 D, or the digital rebel. During that time span, we’ve seen them come out with two more members of the family, the 350D and the 400 D cameras which naturally evolved into the EOS450D, todays model which features just about two times the pixel count of their original.

"In all, I was very impressed with the Canon EOS Rebel XSi and would wholeheartedly recommend it to someone looking for a good camera and lens combo in that price range. I came to know its inner and outer workings very quickly, thanks to a very smart design and layout. Options for more creative shooting were there if desired, but for the most part working in Program and delving into the Picture Styles for fun (even though that’s kind of moot when shooting raw) got me where I wanted to go." - Shutterbug

"The XSi, though, scores for its size. If you’re looking for a small, light camera that’s easy to pack, and that you’re more likely to carry, then the XSi is a better option than the EOS 40D, provided you can live without the features found in the latter." - MacWorld

"Canon has another hit. The Rebel XSi has just about everything you want from a semi-pro camera in a smaller package. It’s small, lighter than its predecessor, and has all the good stuff the competitors have, plus that legendary Canon image quality. Canon made minor but important improvements to the grip and controls, and kept all that was great about its predecessor." - Imaging Resource

Nikon D60At the number two spot we’ve got the Nikon D60 - Average Expert 8,0 (41 experts) Average User 9,3 (523 users) - Nikons D40 has some hallmark features that are also the base for the new D60 model, a good camera with some great features that are in a cost effective small package. Some of the things you can look for in the D-60 are the built in sensor, cleaning and filter and the very same features that made them a watchword in cameras, such as the Active D Lighting and the Color Matrix metering from their D3 and D300.

"The D60 is the latest refinement in Nikon’s entry-level DSLR range. It is one of the smallest DSLRs ever made and features a simple feature-set, not to confuse people getting their first DSLR. Although it cannot be compared with high-end Nikon cameras, the Nikon D60 features strong ergonomics and build quality for its price" - Neo camera

"The Nikon D60 is a worthwhile entry-level D-SLR with solid image quality, but its features don’t really make it stand out from the crowd" - PC magazine

Pentax K20D DSLRShowing up in the number three spot we’ve got the Pentax K20D - Average Expert 8,6 (32 experts) Average User 9,3 (72 users) - The Pentax K20D has a single-lens reflex. It is the product of the collaboration between Samsung of Korea and Pentax Japan; the K20D is almost identical with the Samsung GX-20 with just a few differences. The Pentax K20D is the first DSLR that uses the image sensor that Samsung and Pentax created the CMOS image sensor. With a sensor that has a maximum resolution of 14.6 megapixel and a higher sensitivity of ISO 6400 that ensures high quality images.

"The K20D won’t disappoint. It stands head and shoulders above other DSLRs in its class and easily goes toe-to-toe with cameras costing much more." - MacLife

"The Pentax K20D could be seen as a K10D Mk2, a camera that attempts to move on while putting right the minor flaws in its predecessor. And in that respect, it’s a huge success. The K20D builds on the strengths of its forebear and corrects for the issue that plagued us most. It offers a great on-paper specification that is backed-up by a level of customization that allow you to tailor the camera to the way you want to shoot." - DP review

Sony Alpha A200 DSLRAt number four we’ve got the Sony DSLR-A200 - Average Expert 7,9 (24 experts) Average User 9,3 (234 users) - Sony DSLR A200 is a relatively lighter and smaller model than the A100 which makes it easier to use. This camera measures 5.2 x 4.0 x 2.9 inches (131 x 99 x 71 millimeters) and weighs 22 ounces (625 grams) including the lens, battery, and memory card. It is equipped with a 2.7-inch LCD monitor. The Sony A200’s 10.2 mega-pixel sensor helps to reduce noise and capture pictures with greater detail.

"The A200 is the second iteration of Sony’s entry-level DSLR, and I don’t know how good the first one was, but this one isn’t bad at all. There are some nice features present for an entry-level camera – notably dust reduction, in-camera stabilization, and the ability to use Sony and Minolta lenses. The A200 should be even more attractive since Sony recently dropped its MSRP with the 18-70 kit lens to $500 USD." - Digital Camera Review

"Sony’s SLR juggernaut got rolling early in 2008 with the Alpha A200, a simple, inexpensive, 10.2-megapixel digital SLR camera that takes some pretty impressive pictures. There isn’t a whole lot to talk about in terms of new or revolutionary features, but that’s not a strike against it. Rather than starting a revolution, the Sony A200 refines what was a good camera — the A100 — making it better in several important areas. It now confidently competes favorably with" - Imaging Resource

Olympus E-520Showing up as the number five top camera of 2008 is the: Olympus E-520 - Average Expert 8,1 (25 experts) Average User 9,2 (24 users) - The Olympus E-520’s Image Stabilization technology is built into the camera body to produce clear, sharp and blur-free images. This camera weighs just 7.5 ounces and measures 5.35×3.6-x2.68-inches. Its Autofocus Live View brings subject into sharp focus. Olympus E-520 offers users faster continuous shooting speeds (3.5 vs 3.0 fps).

"Bottom line - The Olympus E-520 is a welcomed addition to Olympus’ line of consumer level dSLRs. While they have included many new features that help increase the appeal of the, there hasn’t been any major changes over the E-510 from last year. Overall, I feel this is a well balanced dSLR model that is sure to offer pleasing results not matter who is behind the viewfinder." - Steves Digicams

"For a Four Thirds system enthusiast, the Olympus E-520 is a no-brainer — you get much of the performance and controls of the flagship E-3 for nearly $1,000 less. And uncommitted photographers would do well to look at the bang for that rock-bottom price: Excellent imaging across the board, very effective image stabilization, live view with clever setting previews, and a slew of useful picture fixes, wrapped in a nice handling, ergonomic body. It’s enough to wipe the ho-hum off anyone’s face." - PopPhoto

Canon Powershot A2000 IS Review

Canon Powershot A2000 ISDigital Camera Info have reviewed the new Canon Powershot A2000 IS - the 10 megapixel camera is an update to the A720 IS and features a 6x optical zoom with optical IS, 17 shooting modes including Easy Mode, Face Detection Technology, Auto Red-Eye Correction, Motion Detection Technology, 3” LCD, it takes AA batteries and is available for £150

"The Canon PowerShot A2000 IS has a couple of significant factors in its favor. It's inexpensive ($230), has a good zoom ratio for a small point-and-shoot, and did well in our color scoring. On the other hand, there's no manual control to speak of, it struggled in most of our other tests, and the lens is slow, particularly for handheld telephoto shooting in less-than-ideal light. If a long zoom at a low price strikes you as a winning combination, the A2000 is worth considering, but you should keep the downsides in mind."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Review

Panasonic LX3DPExpert have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumic DMC-LX3 - the camera features a F2.0 24mm Ultra Wide Angle lens (24 - 60mm), optical image stabilisation, a larger 10 megapixel sensor with higher sensitivity, ISO3200 at Full Resolution, Full Manual Operation, HD Motion Images and HD Output, and a 3.0-inch screen. The Panasonic LX3 is available for £329

"Panasonic deliberately constrained the pixel density on the LX3 to improve picture quality. They chose a limited zoom range in order to increase maximum aperture and resolution. The company has dared to do what serious photographers have been requesting, and they have ignored marketing focus groups. Bravo!"

Pentax Optio V20 Review

Pentax Optio V20Digital Camera Info have reviewed the new Pentax Optio V20 - a compact slim bodied 8 megapixel digital camera with a 5x optical zoom lens, 3" screen and face detection focus. The camera is available for £106:

"For the point-and-shooter who will never bother with manual controls, the Pentax Optio V20 deserves a look for its 5x zoom lens and handsome 3-inch screen in a pocket-friendly size and weight, especially if you can find it selling at a significant discount. While our lab tests turned up significant problems in the white balance system, the other results were acceptable if unexciting, and video performance was actually quite good."

Nikon Coolpix P80 Review

Nikon P80Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix P80 Ultra Zoom digital camera - it features a wide angle 18x optical zoom lens (27-486mm equivalent), 10 megapixel sensor, sensor-shift vibration reduction, 2.7" screen, ISO6400, 1cm macro mode, and Distortion control corrects for barrel distortion. The Nikon Coolpix P80 is available for £240:

"The Coolpix P80 performed well in terms of timing and utility, and offers an excellent range of exposure modes and shooting options to accommodate a wide range of user experience levels. But image quality left something to be desired. The Nikon P80's 18x optical zoom lens covers a 35mm equivalent range of 27-486mm, which is good, but the high chromatic aberration across the frame is a difficult compromise to accept."

Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS SD880 IS Review

Canon IXUS 870 ISDPInterface have reviewed the new Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS - a compact 10 megapixel camera it features a 4x wide-angle optical zoom, optical IS, 3.0” screen, VGA video recording, and is available in silver or gold for £190:

"Overall the Canon PowerShot SD880 IS Digital ELPH is a camera that I would recommend to anyone looking for a stylish and capable ultra-compact camera with a wide-angle lens. The camera isn’t without its flaws (my biggest gripes are edge softness, no manual controls and loose rear dial) but if you can bear the small compromises, you’ll be happy with the rest of the camera – very good battery life, performance, large LCD and all."

Most consumers will be very happy with the Canon Rebel XS, thanks to the high quality, image-stabilized lens, the well-rounded feature-set, and impressive print quality. Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR Review

Canon EOS 50DSteves Digicams have reviewed the new Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR - an update to the 40D - it features a new 15.1 megapixel sensor, 6.3fps shooting, Canon’s latest DIGIC 4 image processor, ISO upto 12800, 3" screen with live view, sensor cleaning, 9 point AF, and face detection. Body only is available for £875:

"Blurring the line between amateur and professional dSLR cameras, Canon has introduced the EOS 50D, as an upgrade to the 40D released last year. This new model is expected to be the camera body of choice for amateur photographers this holiday season. What really makes it stand out from the 40D is the APS-C sized, 15.1-Megapixel CMOS sensor (4752x3168), the new DIGIC 4 image processor, 3-inch Clear View LCD monitor with 920,000 dots, ISO settings from 100-12800 and Live View with Face Detection. One thing that has carried over from the 40D is the 14-bit per channel color space, allowing for incredibly smooth tonal gradation."

Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR Review

Canon EOS 5D MK2Cameratown have reviewed the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR - the new flagship camera features a 21.1MP full frame CMOS sensor, ISO upto 25600, Full HD (1080, 30fps) movie recording, 3" VGA LCD with Live View, 3.9fps JPEG shooting, 9-point AF + 6 Assist AF points, and Magnesium alloy body. The Canon 5D Mark II is available from Amazon UK:

"Whereas most new camera introductions are evolutionary, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is truly a revolutionary camera for Canon as well as for photography in general. After using the EOS 5D Mark II for a few days you cannot help but to feel that you're holding the future of photography right in your hand - even if it is just an infant. The ability to shoot at virtually any ISO without much concern for image noise is creating a remarkable shift in the way photographer's shoot."

The IXUS 90 IS is available for £139:

Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS SD990 IS Review

Canon Digital IXUS 980 ISPhotography BLOG have reviewed the new Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS / SD990 IS, it's Canon's new compact 14.7 megapixel camera it features a 3.7x optical zoom, optical IS, 2.5" screen, optical viewfinder, manual controls, VGA video recording, and will be available in silver or black for £250:

"The Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS / PowerShot SD990 IS Digital ELPH is the current flagship of the IXUS / ELPH range, and the first to offer a true manual mode. While the range of f-stops selectable at any given focal length is rather restricted, probably due to the lack of a proper iris diaphragm, the 45 distinct shutter speeds and 6 different ISO settings still leave enough room for manoeuvre."

Nikon Coolpix S610 Review

Nikon Coolpix S610Cameras.co.uk have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix S610 and S610c. The cameras feature the world's fastest startup time for cameras of their class featuring a 28mm lens, and optical image stabilisation. They feature a 10 megapixel sensor, a wide angle 4x optical zoom lens and the S610c adds wifi support. The S610 is available for £190

"The Nikon Coolpix S610 is not the most flexible digital camera around. If you are shooting landscape shots you can get some improvement if you use the landscape scene mode. It is a shame this camera struggles with more distant scenes as I have few complaints with other, closer in photos and the shutter lag and start up times are impressive."

Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR Review

Canon EOS 5D MK2Cameralabs have reviewed the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR - the new flagship camera features a 21.1MP full frame CMOS sensor, ISO upto 25600, Full HD (1080, 30fps) movie recording, 3" VGA LCD with Live View, 3.9fps JPEG shooting, 9-point AF + 6 Assist AF points, and Magnesium alloy body. The Canon 5D Mark II is available from Amazon UK:

"Canon’s EOS 5D Mark II is a powerful and feature-packed DSLR that represents a significant upgrade over the original 5D, and a tough rival in the growing ‘affordable’ full-frame market. We’re becoming used to seeing new models released every 18 or even 12 months, with often gradual improvements, but a lot has changed in the three years since the EOS 5D was launched."

Nikon Coolpix S610 Review

Nikon Coolpix S610NeoCamera have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix S610 and S610c. They feature a 10 megapixel sensor, a wide angle 4x optical zoom lens and the S610c adds wifi support. The S610 is available for £190

"The Nikon S610 finds itself in the sea of high-resolution ultra-compacts with wide-angle lenses. At least 25 such cameras exist and, despite being slim and well-built, the S610 does not distinguish itself well. Not that it performs poorly, but one must ask why this model rather than another one."

Premium Compact Digital Cameras Reviewed

Panasonic FX150DPReview have reviewed several premium compact digital cameras including the Fuji FinePix F100fd and the new Panasonic Lumix FX150 - a 14.7 megapixel digital camera - it features a 28mm Wide Angle 3.6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Intelligent Auto Mode with AF Tracking, Simple Manual Operation, up to ISO1600 at Full Resolution, and a 2.7" screen. It is available in silver or black for £205.

"Panasonic, like Canon, has a compact camera lineup that has been allowed to slowly evolve into a mature, refined range of products with the emphasis far more on useful photographic features and reliable automatic systems than on gadgetry and novelty. The FX150 feels and acts like a camera that was built to take pictures (something you simply can't say about them all), and for the most part it does so pretty well without needing constant supervision."

Fujifilm FinePix F100fd Review Online!

Fuji F100fdWe've just published our review of the new Fujifilm FinePix F100fd - the new "top of the range" F series camera features a 12 megapixel sensor, a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens, a 2.7" screen, Wide Dynamic Range, Dual Image Stabilisation (anti-shake sensor), Face Detection 3.0 Technology, and ISO upto 12800 (at 3mp). The Fuji F100fd is available for £160

"Overall this is an interesting and potentially impressive 12 megapixel compact digital camera that has great features that work well and gives good results. Although there are one or two manual options missing from the camera, there are plenty remaining to suit nearly all situations. If you're looking for a camera that takes excellent 6 - 12 megapixel photos, has a wide angle 5x zoom and image stabilisation, this is recommended. "

Sony Cybershot T500 Review

Sony T500Cameras.co.uk have reviewed the new ultra compact Sony Cybershot T500 - it features a 10 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom lens, large 3.5" touchscreen, optical image stabilisation, ISO3200, and stereo High Definition video recording (720p, 30fps, MPEG4 AVC/H.264), and is available in silver, black and red for £246:

"I think the Sony DSC T500 will really appeal to people who like great looking gadgets. The HD quality movies and touch sensitive screen are more likely to be the selling points than the picture quality. The picture quality is o.k., but it is mid range rather than anything special."

Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR Review

Canon EOS 5D MK2Ken Rockwell has reviewed the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR - the new flagship camera features a 21.1MP full frame CMOS sensor, ISO upto 25600, Full HD (1080, 30fps) movie recording, 3" VGA LCD with Live View, 3.9fps JPEG shooting, 9-point AF + 6 Assist AF points, and Magnesium alloy body. The Canon 5D Mark II is available from Amazon UK:

"The 5D Mark II, as I write this, is the world's highest-image-qualty 35mm-based DSLR. Any image defects you see are most likely due to your own lack of expertise, and you had better have some extraordinarily good lenses to take advantage of the resolution. Few lenses are as good as the 5D Mark II."

Canon Powershot G10 Review

Canon Powershot G10Trusted Reviews have reviewed the new 14.7 megapixel Canon Powershot G10 - an update to the G9 - it features a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, RAW support, 3" screen, VGA video recording and ISO1600. The Canon G10 is available for £353:

"The Canon PowerShot G10 is still going to be the benchmark by which all other high-spec compacts are measured, but it's no longer the top dog. It is beaten on picture quality and portability by the smaller, lighter and slightly cheaper Panasonic LX3, and is beaten badly on value for money by most entry-level DSLRs. It's still an impressive camera and can produce excellent results, especially in Raw mode, but the price means its appeal is a little too specialised for some."

"Keep the light levels up and the ISO sensitivity down, and you'll get very nice results from the PowerShot SX10. Photos are well exposed (though there is occasional highlight clipping), with vivid, accurate color. Sharpness is right in the middle of the spectrum -- not too sharp, not too soft."

Fujifilm FinePix F60fd Review

Fuji F60fdDPExpert have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix F60fd - an update to the F50fd - the camera features a 12 megapixels sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, image stabilisation sensor, ISO 1600, new 3" screen, face detection, full manual controls, and scene recognition mode. The FinePix F60fd is available for £144

"We like the Fuji look, particularly for skin tones. It took some trial and error before we settled on the N setting and decided it was best to let the camera make the decisions, even if it does mean occasionally hitting ISO levels too high for clean pictures. As a simple point and shoot we rate the F60fd as commendable."

The Canon 5D Mark II is available from Amazon UK:

"In reality though at this price point, even with the limitations of the HD video mode, it's still an amazing deal. I've already shot footage that I could not shoot with rigs that cost me 3x the price of this camera and in higher quality no less."

Nikon Coolpix S710 Review

Nikon Coolpix S710Trusted Reviews have announced the new Nikon Coolpix S710 - the world's smallest 14.5 megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation - it features a wide angle 3.6x optical zoom lens, a 3" screen, a stainless steel body and manual controls. It's available for £217:

"While the S710 is an impressive-looking camera with excellent build quality and lots of big numbers on the box, not least the price tag, the slippery handling, fiddly control dial and slow performance limit its appeal compared to some very strong rivals, and its indifferent image quality, with very limited dynamic range, poor colour depth and noise problems, mean that it is outclassed by its own cheaper stablemates."

Panasonic Lumix FX150 Review

Panasonic FX150DPInterface have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FX150 - a 14.7 megapixel digital camera - it features a 28mm Wide Angle 3.6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Intelligent Auto Mode with AF Tracking, Simple Manual Operation, up to ISO1600 at Full Resolution, and a 2.7" screen. It is available in silver or black for £205.

"Contrary to popular belief, such a high resolution compact camera can still produce very decent pictures. The Panasonic Lumix FX150 took good quality photos up till ISO 400, with the availability of ISO 800 for “just in case” situations. While colors were vivid and pictures were on the sharp side, the camera did suffer from a bit of detail loss at higher ISO settings."

The SX110 IS is available in silver or black for £175

"The settings are a cinch to navigate due to the excellent control scheme and well designed menu system. The body feels large, but well proportioned, and all the buttons are big and uniquely shaped so that you won't hit the wrong one. It has a decent 10x zoom, good color and video scores, and costs a reasonable $250. It's not the smallest, fastest or prettiest camera that we've ever used, but we like it."

Fujifilm FinePix F60fd Review

Fuji F60fdPhotography BLOG have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix F60fd - an update to the F50fd - the camera features a 12 megapixels sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, image stabilisation sensor, ISO 1600, new 3" screen, face detection, full manual controls, and scene recognition mode. The FinePix F60fd is available for £144

"The new F60fd becomes a real option as a pocket camera with manual controls, especially given the low street prices. The aggressive market push to include more and more megapixels has strangely worked in the Fujifilm F60fd's favour, and means that we can highly recommend it as an intuitive, attractive, competitively priced pocket camera that takes pictures that are every bit the equal of its more expensive rivals."

Polaroid Pogo Mobile Printer Mini Review

Polaroid Pogo Printer

The Polaroid Pogo Instant Mobile Printer, from Polaroid, is a compact inkless Zink based printer with USB and bluetooth support that prints small 3" by 2" sticker photos. It uses a lithium-ion rechargable battery and photos take roughly 1 minute to print. The printer comes with 10 sheets of Zink Photo Paper, an AC adapter and power lead, bluetooth passcode (printed on a card under the printer), a 1 year warranty and a short user manual. The printer is available for £86, with additional paper available for £9 for 30 sheets.

Read our Polaroid Pogo Zink Printer Mini Review here.

Here's what Polaroid have to say about the printer:

"Polaroid has reinvented instant photography for the digital age with the Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Mobile Printer. Sleek, stylish, and easy to use, the Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Mobile Printer lets you share photos whether you are on vacation or just hanging out with your friends. Bring Polaroid magic from your camera cell phone or digital camera with ZINK™ Zero Ink™ Printing Technology from ZINK Imaging. Mobile and easy-to-use, the Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Mobile Printer provides a new, innovative way to share digital photos directly from your camera cell phone or digital camera, instantly. The Polaroid Way."

Polaroid Pogo Lamb Banana

The pictures above (click to enlarge) show bluetooth photos printed from the Sony Ericsson C905 - transfer was fairly rapid - however the first photo is slightly under-exposed (taken without flash) and this is exagerated when printed and appears slightly too dark. The second photo, of the Super Lamb Banana looks better (view the original photo here), with good detail, although it too is overly dark in the shadowy areas of the photo and vertical banding can be seen in the prints.

Polaroid Pogo Paper Tray

Loading the paper is very straightforward, the top of the printer opens up at the press of a button and the paper is placed into the printer, with a barcode "Zink Smart Sheet" at the bottom, this is read through the printer presumably so the printer knows how many sheets of photo paper have been loaded. The side features a power button, battery and alarm status LEDs, and usb socket.

The Lithium Ion battery (7.4v, 450mAh) sits under a metal cover, and provides 15 print battery life, after a full charge of two hours.

Polaroid Pogo Printer Results

Click to enlarge - The print quality is acceptable, detail appears quite good, but colour could be better (reds are oversaturated for example). Dark areas often print overly dark, and there appears to be quite noticable verticle banding in all photos. The paper is glossy in appearance, and photos are printed with some cropping due to the different aspect ratios (digital is 4:3, while this prints onto 3:2). The photos shown above were taken with the Canon Powershot SX110 IS, and the original versions can be found in the Canon Powershot SX110 IS Gallery.

Overall: As an extremely portable printing solution the Polaroid Pogo Instant Mobile Printer is an appealling choice, priced competitively at £86, there are very few competitors. The Polaroid Pogo offers acceptable, albeit small, prints, and has good connectively through bluetooth and USB pictbridge. The only concerns are the slightly high cost per print, the short battery life, the average print quality and the small photo size, but if you just want something ultra small and portable then the Polaroid Pogo could be for you.

What I like:
+ Very small portable photo printer
+ Bluetooth and USB support (Pictbridge)
+ Very easy to use, without referring to the manual
+ No need to buy ink
+ Acceptable prints

What I don't like:
- Small prints
- Banding in images
- Print quality could be better
- 15 print battery life
- Expensive prints (30p each)

For more information please visit the Polaroid website. The photos shown of the prints and printer were taken with flash and therefore the prints looks brighter than they actually are.

Pentax K200D Digital SLR Review

Pentax K200D DSLRImaging Resource have reviewed the new Pentax K200D Digital SLR - it's a 10 megapixel update to the K100D - and features a 2.7" screen, shake reduction, dust reduction, ISO upto 1600, 11 point AF, Expanded Dynamic Range function, plus a weather and dust resistant body. The Pentax K200D is available for £387 with kit lens:

"The Pentax K200D is a capable digital SLR, a very good choice for consumers who are starting to chafe against the limitations of a point-and-shoot digital camera and want to work with a more advanced camera. I'm calling it a bridge camera, as it has plenty of functions built-in that will be familiar to point-and-shoot digicam users, but also maintains the advanced modes and features of regular SLR cameras."

Nikon Coolpix P6000 Review by DPExpert

Nikon Coolpix P6000DPExpert have reviewed the new 13.5 megapixel Nikon Coolpix P6000 - it features a wide angle 4x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, a 2.7" screen, RAW support, manual controls, external flash support, manual focus, GPS support, and an optical viewfinder. The camera is available for £310

"We like the design and construction of the camera, and we found that up to ISO200 and shooting RAW we got excellent results. At ISO400 the pictures are acceptable for standard size prints. We couldn’t get the GPS to work but we couldn’t imagine when we would need it. We suspect that the LAN socket is Nikon’s admission that they couldn’t get the wireless connectivity of their compacts to work properly. But all in all, a superior compact and good value."

Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR Review

Canon EOS 5D MK2Photography BLOG have reviewed the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR - the new flagship camera features a 21.1MP full frame CMOS sensor, ISO upto 25600, Full HD (1080, 30fps) movie recording, 3" VGA LCD with Live View, 3.9fps JPEG shooting, 9-point AF + 6 Assist AF points, and Magnesium alloy body. The Canon 5D Mark II is available from Amazon UK:

"Much more successful, and I think where the real strength of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II lies, is the amazing combination of high-resolution images with low-light performance. The new 21 megapixel CMOS sensor and expanded ISO range thankfully haven't compromised image quality in any way, quite the opposite in fact. There's virtually no visible noise at all from ISO 50 all the way up to ISO 3200."

Olympus SP-565 Ultra Zoom Review

Olympus SP-565 Ultra ZoomCameras.co.uk have reviewed the new Olympus SP-565 Ultra Zoom - the camera features a wide angle 20x optical zoom lens (26 - 520mm), 10 megapixel sensor, 13.5 fps shooting (at 3mp), 25 scene modes, shadow adjustment, face detection, anti shake sensor, manual modes, a 2.5" screen, and supports XD and MicroSD cards. The camera is available for £255

"To be honest I don't think there is a great deal to choose between most super zoom cameras. Unless you are very fussy about picture quality they all do a decent job, so a lot of your decision to buy is likely to be based on features and handling. The Olympus SP-565UZ handles well and has a full range of features. Therefore it is worth adding to any shortlist."

Canon Powershot A2000 IS Review

Canon Powershot A2000 ISDCResource have reviewed the new Canon Powershot A2000 IS - the 10 megapixel camera is an update to the A720 IS and features a 6x optical zoom with optical IS, 17 shooting modes including Easy Mode, Face Detection Technology, Auto Red-Eye Correction, Motion Detection Technology, 3” LCD, it takes AA batteries and is available for £155

"The PowerShot A2000 IS has a much slimmer, sleeker look than its predecessor. While it undoubtedly looks better than the PowerShot A720, the A2000 isn't as easy to hold. And, unless you have "micro thumbs", odds are that you'll be smudging the LCD when you hold the camera. Despite being made entirely of plastic, the A2000 is well put together, with sturdy doors and a metal tripod mount."

Fujifilm FinePix F60fd Review

Fuji F60fdTrusted Reviews have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix F60fd - an update to the F50fd - the camera features a 12 megapixels sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, image stabilisation sensor, ISO 1600, new 3" screen, face detection, full manual controls, and scene recognition mode. The FinePix F60fd is available for £144

"The F60fd is a well made, attractive-looking camera with excellent handling. It has some useful features including semi-manual exposure, but the limited zoom range is a bit restrictive compared to its main competition. It has phenomenal low-light focusing ability, but unfortunately it doesn’t have the high-ISO image quality to match."

"The Samsung TL34HD is somewhat of a mixed bag. While it offers some Very "cool" features, good image quality, fast performance, and loads of exposure options, the High ISO noise, above average amounts of CA, and the difficult to use touch screen system really bring this camera down."
