Bob Atkins has reviewed the new Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi - a 12.2 megapixel update to the 400D - it features 3.5fps shooting, live view shooting, 9 point AF, 3" screen, SD memory card support, and Canon's dust reduction system. The 450D Body only is priced at £389, the EOS 450D with 18-55mm IS kit is £438.

"The Rebel XSi could be looked at as both a "baby brother" to the EOS 40D and the new EOS 50D as well as an upgrade of the Rebel XTi. It has the basic size and shape of the XTi with the same shutter speed range, the same flash sync speed and the same ISO range, but it has a new, higher pixel count sensor, Live View, Highlight Tone Priority, High ISO Noise reduction, Spot metering, a 14-bit A/D converter and viewfinder ISO display first found on the EOS 40D."

"The camera speed is excellent, with a good switch on time, fast focusing time, excellent shutter response, quick playback mode, quick menus, very good continuous shooting, and good flash recharge time. The camera has a wide range of features that should suit most people, such as numerous scene modes, macro mode and optical image stabilisation."

ThinkCamera have reviewed the new Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi - a 12.2 megapixel update to the 400D - it features 3.5fps shooting, live view shooting, 9 point AF, 3" screen, SD memory card support, and Canon's dust reduction system. The 450D Body only is priced at £429, the EOS 450D with 18-55mm IS kit is £449.

"There are one or two minor hiccups; live view arguably being the biggest. The LV system uses contrast-detection autofocus, which is from the 'accurate, but glacial' school. It's perfect for tripod-based still life or macro shots of non-moving things, but it falls way behind the more useful systems found in current Olympus and especially Sony DSLRs."

"The overall performance of the XSI is good; very good in fact for its price. 3.5 FPS is also very good, especially since the camera has a big enough buffer to shoot more than 50 JPGs continuously at this speed, or 6 raws. Considering that this isn't a pro level camera by any means, few will find this level of shooting speed to be a hindrance."

"The Canon EOS Rebel XSi is a very good entry-level digital SLR. It offers very good photo quality (with the appropriate tweaks), lighting fast performance, live view, and a large LCD display. The camera has its share of flaws, though, including soft JPEGs at default settings, redeye, sluggish contrast detect autofocus, and a rather high price. Still, the Rebel XSi is a solid choice for those looking for their first SLR, and thus, it earns my recommendation."
