DPReview have just reviewed the new Canon Powershot A590 IS in a group test with nine other budget cameras. The A590 IS features an 8 megapixel sensor, 4x optical zoom lens, 2.5" screen, face detection focus, and takes AA batteries - with full manual controls, support for optional lens accessories, and optical image stabilisation. The A590 is available for £103 making it the cheapest Canon available with optical image stabilisation.

"If you're looking for a simple point and shoot camera - or take a lot of pictures in the evening with flash - the A590 IS certainly wouldn't be high on our list of recommendations. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a camera with extensive photographic control that will allow you to learn about the craft of picture taking without breaking the bank, this is an absolute bargain."

"The camera performs well in a variety of situations, with fairly good overall responsiveness and timing, producing good quality images, with good exposure and overall color. The availability of a 15-second maximum shutter time and the varying level of manual exposure control are also great bonuses, making the camera much more flexible than many in its price range."

The A590 is available for £112 making it the cheapest Canon available with optical image stabilisation, and possibly one of the best budget cameras of 2008 so far.

"The Canon Powershot A590 IS is a robust compact camera that provides an impressive 2.5" LCD screen, 8 megapixel sensor, 4x optical zoom lens and image stabilisation. Image quality is generally very good, and although noise is quite high compared to the competition, images are useable up to ISO400 and tend to maintain good detail. The camera's screen works well and battery life is excellent. Overall this is an appealing camera offering excellent value for money, and a number of features that should suit beginners as well as experts."

"Also, for a model aimed at beginners, features are surprisingly comprehensive, its response times – save for that rather sluggish zoom – pretty good, and it's nice to see true optical image stabilisation included as standard on a camera that costs what it does. The mainly plastic build is well disguised by a more professional looking finish overall, while, once batteries and card are inserted, the whole thing feels reassuringly solid and robust."
