"The Panasonic Lumix LS80 is a basic entry-level camera with 8 megapixels, 3X optical zoom and a 2.5 inch LCD. The LCD is very usable and the lens which starts at 33 mm is a small but useful plus. The LS80’s plastic build is not flimsy but I did find that memory card door not very sturdy and it doesn’t open up wide, making it hard to swap memory cards. There’s no speaker here either, means you can record movies with sound but only hear it later on your computer."

Fujifilm have announced the new Fujifilm FinePix A100 and A150 - both cameras feature a 10 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, face detection, ISO1600, and take AA batteries. The A100 features a 2.7" screen, and the A150 features a 3" screen:

Canon have announced the new Canon Powershot A480 - it replaces the A470 - and features a new more compact design, 3.3x optical zoom lens, 10 megapixel sensor, 2.5" screen, face detection, DIGIC III, 30fps VGA video mode and takes AA batters. The camera will be available in silver, red, blue or black from February here.

Sony have announced the new budget Sony Cybershot DSC-S950 - a 10 megapixel digital camera with a 4x optical zoom lens starting at 33mm, a 2.7" screen, digital image stabilisation, available in black, silver and pink, the camera is available for £98.

Olympus have announced the new compact budget Olympus FE-5000, it features a 10 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom lens, real image stabisation, and a 2.7" screen. It will be available in silver, or black for £134.

Olympus have announced the new budget Olympus FE-45, it features a 10 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, and a 2.5" screen. It will be available in silver, black or blue.

Buying a Digital Camera for Children?

Photodoto have written an excellent guide on introducing your children to photography. They suggest starting off with an older 2 megapixel camera and seeing how it goes from there, if they like it, then move on to a better camera, such as the Kodak Easyshare C613 or C713 (£49 at Amazon).

"Don’t rush out and buy a new camera for your child’s first attempt. You’ve probably got an old camera somewhere, it doesn’t matter if it’s a film camera or an early digital camera with 2 MP, as long as it works it’ll do. If your child shows interest for more than a week or so then the chances are a new camera just for him will be used and appreciated."

My only concern with this is the the extending lens could be easily damaged, and while the Olympus 1030SW would survive rough treatment, it's price is a little too much for small kids. Are there any new cameras available that don't have an extending lens, but are still budget friendly?

Casio Exilim EX-Z80 Review

Cameras.co.uk have reviewed the new Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z80 - an 8 megapixel digital cameras with a 3x optical zoom lens, 2.7" screen, auto shutter function, and face detection. The Casio Z80 is available for £100

"Small, lightweight and relatively inexpensive. It would be too much to ask for the Exilim EX-Z80 to offer top drawer photo quality, but the camera can take a decent snapshot in most situations. It also scores well for ease of use."

Digital SLRs are now available for under £200!

Many of last years Digital SLRs can now be bought for less than £200 from ebay UK - including the Pentax K100D with lens (pictured), Olympus E-410 with lens and Olympus E-300 with lens. Whilst they may no longer be the latest models, they should offer a good budget entry into the Digital SLR world, and should offer good low light performance.
