Mobile Camera Phones Killing Low End Cameras?

Wired.com say that new cellphones with cameras are beginning to impact on sales of low-end digital cameras - more so with the ever increasing focus on camera quality and features in mobile phones - such as the f2.4 lens in the Nokia N86 8mp shown above, and Xenon flash in the Sony Satio.

“Handsets soon may begin to cannibalize the low end of the digital still camera market as they incorporate higher megapixels and flash capabilities,” says Pam Tufegdzic, consumer electronics analyst at iSuppli in a statement. “This is likely to occur first in Asia and Europe as consumers in these regions seem to be more comfortable with taking pictures using camera phones.”

Nokia N86 8mp Camera Phone Review

"Photos outside, in good light, can be pretty good. By pretty good, I mean good for a camera phone (see the examples shown - these are some of the better photos taken with the camera). I still think even the cheapest branded digital camera from Kodak (see below), Fuji, etc would be better than the Nokia N86. The macro mode is fairly good, but often the photos look a little washed out."

Samsung SCH-W880 12 Megapixel Camera Phone

SamsungHub (via Engadget) have details of the new Samsung SCH-W880 / AMOLED 12M mobile phone with 12 megapixel camera, 3x optical zoom lens, mode dial, zoom control and camera-like shutter release. It features HD video recording, 3.3" WVGA screen, and also appears to feature a focus assist lamp, and real flash. Available in Korea only at the moment.

LG KM900 Arena 5mp Camera Phone Review

"The LG KM900 Arena is a great looking phone. It has a slick user-interface, though the more expensive Apple iPhone's is more evolved. If you want to file manage and navigate, you will be frustrated by the Arena. After the amazing image quality of the LG KC780, the Arena's images were rather disappointing."

Casio Exilim W63CA 8mp Camera Phone

Casio (Japan) have announced the new 8 megapixel Casio Exilim W63CA - a flip camera phone with an 8 megapixel Casio Exilim digital camera on one side, a phone in the middle, and a large 3.1" swivel screen. The lens is a wide angle 28mm lens, with no optical zoom. It will be available in green, pink, silver, and titanium in Japan. Via DCViews.
