Canon has announced the new Canon EOS 1D X – full frame Digital SLR – it features an 18 megapixel sensor, 12/14fps shooting, ISO up to 512,400, Full HD video, 3.2inch screen, dual DIGIC 5 processors, and ethernet port built in! The camera will be available in October priced at £459, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon UK.

Sony Cybershot HX9vePHOTOzine compares the latest GPS Pocket Zooms from Sony, Panasonic, Canon, and Fujifilm, including the Sony Cybershot HX9v (shown above) – a new pocket zoom / ultra zoom – with a wide-angle 16x optical zoom (24-384mm), 16.2 megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor, GPS, HD 1080p movie MPEG-4, optical image stabilisation, ISO3200, 300 shot battery life, 3.0″ 921,000-dot XtraFine LCD screen, it is available in black or gold from Amazon UK

Interestingly the 12 megapixel Canon Powershot SX230 HS appears to have the best image quality and detail compared to the other 14 and 16 megapixel cameras on test.

Serious Compacts: Olympus XZ-1 Reviews: Luminous Landscape thinks it could be the best serious compact, another review at ePHOTOzine. Or could it be the Panasonic Lumix LX5? ePHOTOzine thinks so. The latest challenger is the Sigma DP2x – with X3 Foveon Sensor view: sample photos.

Samsung PL210ePHOTOzine has reviewed the Samsung PL210 – a compact camera with a wide-angle 10x optical zoom lens, it starts at 27mm and zooms to 270mm. It’s quite a neat little camera, but according to the review doesn’t do enough to stand out compared to the abundant competition. It also features a 3inch screen, 14 megapixel sensor, lithium ion battery, and takes microSD cards.

More pocket-zooms reviewed: Casio Exilim H30 – comes Recommended thanks to a 12.5x optical zoom lens, 1000 shot battery life, and consistent performance. If you want or need even more zoom, have a look at the Fujifilm FinePix HS20EXR – reviewed by NeoCamera.

More Casio reviews: Casio Exilim ZS5 and ZS10 two similar compact cameras, with 5x optical zoom lens and wallet friendly price (depending where you shop), they are available for less than £100. The Canon Powershot A3200 IS is another wallet friendly camera, available for around £105. If you want an ultra compact, then you could have a look at the stylish Canon Digital IXUS 220 HS – the HS stands for High Speed and the camera features a quick CMOS sensor.

“The camera is really well made, looks beautiful with its large touch screen on the rear and operating the camera with the screen is easy. Of the few physical buttons on the camera there is a dedicated button to switch the camera into Smart Auto mode. The buttons on the screen are labeled with big logos which are easy to understand and the writing is crisp and clear, making the camera menus easy to navigate.”
