Digital Photography School have reviewed the new Olympus EVOLT E-30 Digital SLR - the new camera features a 12.3 megapixel sensor, 2.7" swivel screen with live view, 5fps shooting, built in image stabilisation, 11 point AF, ISO100 - 3200, face detection, level gauge, shadow adjustment, and supersonic wave filter (for dust reduction). The Olympus E30 is available from Amazon with kit lens.

"A feature not seen often is multiple exposure: the E-30 can shoot a final, layered collection of two, three or four shots. The brightness of each can be set to half, a third or fourth of the final single exposure. You can also begin with a RAW image and layer extra shots over it. Then, if you’re really adept, you can compress your layer of four and lay another four over it!"

"This 12.3 megapixel DSLR provides very high resolution with excellent definition of fine detail in JPEGs and average quality above ISO 800. Slightly better image quality is possible in Raw captures when using the optional Olympus Studio 2 software for modifying and converting the files to JPEG."

We've just published several sample photos from the new Olympus EVOLT E-30 and E-620 (featuring David Bailey). The E-620 fits in between the E-520, and the E-420 in size measuring 130 x 94.0 x 60 mm - and is the smallest DSLR with anti-shake sensor, it features a 12 megapixel sensor, a 2.7" swivel screen, 7 point AF, dust reduction, backlit buttons, ISO3200, and art filters. It will be available in May priced between the E-520 and E-30:

"The Olympus E-30 is a very good digital SLR, and arguably one of the best they've ever made. It offers very good photo quality, image stabilization, generally snappy performance, live view on a rotating 2.7" LCD display, plenty of manual controls, and built-in support for wireless flashes. Other nice touches include a built-in level and pitch meter, the ability to preview different exposure and white balance settings, and yes, even the art filters are kind of fun."

"The E-30 is a brave attempt by Olympus to offer something different in the mid-range DSLR market, with a strong emphasis on in-camera creative effects that actually prove to be fun to use. The Multiple Exposure mode in particular is a great example of making a traditional photographic technique easier. Sure, you can replicate most of the E-30's artistic filters on a computer, but there's something to be said for being able to do it instantly and even preview the effect before you press the shutter button."

"However, the E-30 is better to handle, the controls have been slightly relocated and adjusted to deliver more pleasing ergonomics. Unlike the E-3, the camera doesn't seem to get in the way of itself. To me it is a definite notch up on the E-3 in the handling stakes. For folks upgrading from the E-4 & 5XX models the handling will seem strange to start with but will soon prove a revelation as it is well thought out and delivered."
