The Best Digital Cameras of 2009 - The Year in Review

Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR

This year has seen a large number of interesting new digital cameras appear - digital camera's had to innovate this year just to get noticed! And with that in mind I've added a new section to the "Top Digital Cameras Reviewed" section called "Best Tech" which is short for "Best New Technology" - in there you'll find some of my personal favourites, or most innovative new digital cameras, such as the Olympus PEN E-P1 which introduced a whole new category of camera, the Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR the world's smallest 10x optical zoom camera with Fujifilm EXR sensor, the Ricoh CX2 with 5fps shooting and an impressive high resolution 920k 3" screen, and the Casio Exilim FC100 with 30fps shooting and ultra high speed video (upto 1000fps shooting!).

Panasonic FS7Another great camera from this year is the Panasonic Lumix FS7, it's compact, stylish, takes great photos, and is also one of the cheapest cameras available, priced at £105, with real optical image stabilisation - which means that more of your shots should come out blur free!

Panasonic Lumix TZ6Panasonic were on top form this year, with every new camera providing something new, innovative, or just great value for money, such as the Panasonic Lumix TZ6 (ZS1), it features a 25mm wide angle 12x optical zoom lens, image stabilisation, and 10 megapixel sensor, and proves that you don't have to buy a huge camera to get a lot of zoom!

This year saw the continuation of the megapixel race, however, this was mainly confined to the mobile phone world, where everybody seemed to race to 12 megapixel camera phones, with the introduction of the 12 megapixel Sony Ericsson Satio (and others), while the digital camera world realised less is better, and "downgraded" to 9 and 10 megapixel sensors. The 8 megapixel Sony Ericsson Cybershot C905 (reviewed here) showed that with some effort you can get some decent shots from camera phones.

Memory Cards

Don't forget to buy a large memory card for your camera - I tend to buy Sandisk and have never had a problem with them! Have a look at our guide to memory cards for details on all the different kinds of memory cards, or for something more extreme, have a look at Samsung's new Waterproof Memory Cards.

While we're on the subject, hopefully next year will see the death of XD memory cards, with only Olympus still using them. If only Sony would stop using Sony Memory Sticks, although considering they use it in everything they make, I think it's quite a long way off yet. Some manufacturers, have switched to MicroSD cards in some of their products, such as the Samsung ST550, but am I the only one who thinks these cards are TOO small?

Panasonic Lumix FP8 Review at Photography BLOG

Panasonic Lumix FP8

Photography BLOG has reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FP8 - the new ultra compact camera features a 28mm wide angle 4.6x optical zoom lens (28 - 128mm), and new Power Optical Image Stabilisation (O.I.S.), a 2.7" screen, HD 720p Video at 30fps, 12 megapixel sensor, ultra high-speed start-up of approx. 0.95 seconds, and LED Illumination Button. The camera is available in silver, black, and red for £189.

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 is a new 12.1 megapixel compact camera with a 28mm, 4.6x Leica DC lens. The FP8 is quite different to previous designs from Panasonic, featuring a futuristic flat body and retracting lens with folding optics and blue LED cursor buttons that light up when pressed. Panasonic Lumix GF1 M43 DSLR Review

Panasonic Lumix GF1

Cameralabs has reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix GF1 Micro Four Thirds DSLR - the camera features a 12.1 megapixel live view sensor, HD 720p Video at 30fps, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 1:1 aspect ratio, AF assist lamp, ISO100 - 3200, 3fps shooting, 3.0" 3:2 aspect 460k pixel screen, dust reduction, and built in flash. Compared to the Olympus E-P1 - It lacks the in body image stablisation, and instead relies on optical IS in the lens. The camera is available in Black, Silver, Red and White, for £619 with kit lens, or £449 body only.

"The new Lumix GF1 departs from the mini-DSLR-styling of the earlier G1 and GH1, instead adopting a relatively compact form factor. Like the Olympus E-P1 before it, the GF1 therefore delivers the combination of large sensor, interchangeable lenses and portability which enthusiasts have been requesting for years. It may still be fairly chunky compared to a typical compact, but is considerably smaller and lighter than a DSLR, especially when fitted with a thin pancake prime lens, like Panasonic’s 20mm f1.7 model."

The camera is available in silver, black, and red for £189.

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC FP8 is a 12 megapixel, pocket camera. One of the big attractions for me is the speedy response of the Lumix DMC FP8. It is lightening fast to turn on and there is little delay between pressing the shutter button and the picture being taken. Key features include image stabilisation and High Definition movies. You can zoom in and out while shooting a movie too. There is a 4.6x, wide able lens. Zoom can be increased to 9.1x when shooting at lower resolutions."

Panasonic Lumix GF1

ByThom has reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix GF1 Micro Four Thirds DSLR - the camera features a 12.1 megapixel live view sensor, HD 720p Video at 30fps, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 1:1 aspect ratio, AF assist lamp, ISO100 - 3200, 3fps shooting, 3.0" 3:2 aspect 460k pixel screen, dust reduction, and built in flash. "I was quite happy to see Panasonic develop the GF1. On paper it looked like a perfect bridge between the LX3 and the G1/G1h siblings. Moreover, my biggest issue with the Olympus was autofocus performance, and Panasonic seems to have figured out contrast autofocus better than the rest of the pack. Thus, My hope was that I'd just get a "fixed" E-P1. Unfortunately, that's not exactly what I got."

The camera is available in Black, Silver, Red and White, for £729 with kit lens, or £499 body only.

"The GF1 is "pocketable" the way the Canon G10 or Olympus E-P1 is—you have to have big pockets like maybe those in a sport jacket. Better yet, a purse works well—even if, for husbands, it isn't your own purse, but is usually nearby. The GF1 isn't much bigger (with the pancake lens) than the Canon G10, and is the smallest camera made with interchangeable lenses and a built in flash."

Panasonic Lumix FX550 FX580 Review

Panasonic FX550DCResource has reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FX550 / FX580 - it features a 25mm Ultra Wide-angle 5x Optical Zoom lens, 3" touch screen, 12 megapixel sensor, HD Motion Pictures and HD Output, intelligent auto mode and manual controls, it is available for £219

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580 ($399) may look like Just Another Ultra-Compact Camera, but it has two features that most cameras in its class do not. The first is a 3-inch touchscreen LCD display. While many camera manufacturers have touchscreen cameras, the FX580 is somewhat unique in that it doesn't force you to use the touchscreen for everything -- there are "regular" controls too. This, in my opinion, is a big plus."

Panasonic Lumix GH1 DSLR Review

Panasonic GH1PhotographyBay have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 - an update to the G1 - it adds HD-video recording at 1920 × 1080 at 24fps to the 12 megapixel live view micro four thirds camera, it also features a new lens specifically designed for HD video recording. The Panasonic GH1 is available from Amazon UK

"I was really pleased with the GH1 as a fun and capable alternative to a DSLR. It’s certainly not a camera for everyone; however, it’s a camera anyone can pick up and start using. If all the buttons are too intimidating, it’s easy to pick the GH1 up, set it to Auto mode and start shooting. Users wanting to move up from a point and shoot camera to something with better image quality will instantly benefit from the GH1’s larger sensor."

"Despite the recent economic turmoil and increases in photography equipment prices, the Panasonic FS25 is the same price at launch as the previous FS20 model (at least at the time of writing). Therefore it again represents great value, offering many of the stand-out features of the premium FX series at a lower introductory price point."

"No sooner had the Olympus EP-1 been introduced than Panasonic announced the GF1, a direct competitor, though it would be some months till it would actually become available. Which43.com - Compares the GF1 and E-P1

Panasonic GF1 vs Olympus E-P1

Which43.com is a new blog about the new Panasonic Lumix GF1 and Olympus PEN E-P1 Micro Four Thirds cameras and compares features, lenses, plus more. The Panasonic GF1 is available for £714 with kit lens, while the Olympus PEN E-P1 is available for £630 with kit lens.

"The Olympus 17mm f2.8. Contrast-wise it’s a little bit flat, it’s really not that sharp and it has quite a bit of distortion. However, it gives a great field of view that is both narrow enough to be intimate yet wide enough to allow busier compositions. Thankfully, RAW files stand up to a good bit of prodding, so you can still get some impressive results out of it. For day-to-day snapshots, I prefer it over the 20mm f1.7."

Panasonic Lumix FZ35 FZ38 Review

Panasonic Lumix FZ35

Cameralabs have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FZ35 / FZ38 - the new camera features a 27mm wide angle 18x optical zoom lens (27 - 486mm), new Power Optical Image Stabilisation (O.I.S.), ultra high-speed start-up of approx. 1.2 seconds, a 2.7" screen, HD 720p Video at 30fps, 12 megapixel sensor, and manual operation. The camera will be available in black from September, for £265.

"The optical range of course remains the highlight here, and even though Panasonic has now become the ‘shortest’ super-zoom in the current pack, it remains extremely flexible in use. It starts with decent 27mm wide-angle coverage, and 18x later ends up at an equivalent of 486mm. Sure, that’s shorter than the industry-leading 26x range (26-676mm) of the Olympus SP-590UZ, but 486mm is still very serious telephoto and we never found any situations where it wasn’t long enough."

"The Panasonic Lumix GF1 is a joy of a camera to shoot with. It gave us better shots than we could hope for with any compact, at an acceptable trade-off between size and convenience. It's dead-easy to use, with Panasonic's intelligent iA (Intelligent Auto) mode for point and shoot situations, and full manual settings for finer control."

Panasonic Lumix FT1 TS1 Review

Panasonic FT1

Gizmodo have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FT1 / TS1 - the FT1 is a Water Proof 3.0m, Shock Proof 1.5m and Dust Proof camera it features a 28mm Wide-angle 4.6x Optical Zoom lens, optical image stabilisation, 2.7" screen, 12 megapixel sensor, HD Motion Pictures and HD Output, and intelligent auto mode. The FT1 is available for £239:

"The photos were among the best in low light, high ISO and daylight. There was a simple beach/surf macro mode which worked well enough. Colors were accurate, and I only noticed a slight distortion around the edges while zoomed out. (Many periscoping internal zoom cameras have this issue.) The lens went pretty wide at a 28mm equivalent and the zoom was almost top of the class at 128mm."

Panasonic Lumix GF1

"Panasonic today announced the newest addition to its LUMIX G Micro System line-up of advanced digital interchangeable lens system cameras based on the Micro Four Thirds system standard. The new LUMIX DMC-GF1 debuts as the world’s smallest and lightest system camera with built-in flash*. The DMC-GF1 features an elegant, compact flat body and combines great performance with ultimate operating and shooting ease. Furthermore, it effectively optimizes the advantages of a system camera to assure outstanding image quality. The new camera is capable of recording vivid still shots, as well as smooth, beautiful motion pictures. It also features the advanced AVCHD Lite movie for recording extended HD movies, networking with other AV devices and recording in the Motion JPEG format for greater compatibility with PCs."

The DMC-GF1 comes with unique functions that include exposure meter and shutter speed preview through the live view. A number of accessories, including the Live View Finder that provides full-time live view, makes photography a lot more fun, while expanding the user's artistic capabilities. The camera comes in three attractive body colors: true black, active red, and sleek silver. Experienced photographers will find the GF1 an ideal everyday camera, while those new to system cameras will see that it gives them the potential to explore realms of photography far beyond the limits of compact cameras.

The DMC-GF1 does not contain the pentaprism found on other standard interchangeable lens cameras. This mirror-less structure allows for an extremely thin neo-classic body design and significantly reduces the size of the G1 by 35% and its weight by 26%. Despite its size, the GF1 comes equipped with a built-in flash and boasts a large, 3.0-inch Intelligent LCD with a wide viewing angle and full 460,000-dot resolution. The Intelligent LCD offers extremely fine, automatic backlight control in combination with high resolution for outstanding viewing in sunny outdoor or dim indoor situations.

Panasonic has succeeded in raising the level of image quality for all LUMIX G Micro System cameras to rival or even surpass that of D-SLR cameras. The 4/3-type 12.1-megapixel Live MOS sensor in the GF1 offers the best of both worlds - the superior image quality of a CCD sensor, and the lower power consumption of a CMOS sensor. It can deliver up to 60 frames-per-second Full-time Live View images, while reproducing images with fine detail and rich gradation. The sophisticated LSI (Venus Engine HD) separates chromatic noise from luminance noise and applies noise reduction to each, so users can capture beautiful images, even when shooting at high ISO sensitivity levels.

The DMC-GF1 also features My Colour mode with a total of seven preset effects – Expressive, Retro, Pure, Elegant, Monochrome, Dynamic Art, and Silhouette while inheriting the previous Custom mode that lets users manually set the colour, brightness and saturation levels. With the Live View function, users can see how these settings will affect the photo even before they shoot.

The DMC-GF1 can record 1280 x 720 high-definition motion picture in AVCHD Lite that features long recording time and high compatibility with audio-visual equipment. The action starts at a press of a button while most of the settings for photo recording are managed. Movie recording formats include HD Motion JPEG in 1280 x 720, QVGA, VGA and WVGA. Beginners can record excellent movies, because the popular iA (Intelligent Auto) is also available for motion image recording. Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.) helps prevent handshake when using high-powered zoom, while Face Detection automatically detects a face in the frame and adjusts focus, exposure, contrast, and skin complexion so it always turns out beautifully. Intelligent Exposure continually checks the ambient light level and adjusts the exposure setting as conditions change. Finally, Intelligent Scene Selector automatically switches between Normal, Portrait, Macro, Scenery, and Low Light modes according to the situation to optimize visual quality.

The contrast AF system in the DMC-GF1 features the industry’s high-speed (approx. 0.3 sec with a Lumix G standard zoom lens H-FS014045.) Users can choose from multiple-area AF with up to 23 focus areas, 1-area AF with a selectable focus area, Face Detection, and AF Tracking. The DMC-GF1 also has a Quick AF function that begins focusing as soon as the user aims the camera to enable quicker focusing. Continuous AF keeps the subject in focus at all times.

The DMC-GF1 has advanced functions that will satisfy experienced photographers and yet is easy for beginners to use, thanks to its improved iA mode. With Face Recognition*, up to six faces can be registered, and up to three can be simultaneously recognized to show their names once registered. When the familiar face appears in the frame again, the camera displays the name of that person and prioritizes focus and exposure so that the face is bright and in sharp focus. In addition to these advanced functions, the iA mode includes fundamental functions users need in a good digital still camera, including MEGA O.I.S., which helps prevent blurring from hand-shake, and Intelligent ISO Control, which reduces motion blur by adjusting the ISO sensitivity if the subject moves as the shot is taken. Intelligent Exposure optimizes the exposure for each part of an image to prevent blocked shadows and blown highlights and ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully. It now features an automatic backlight compensation function that activates whenever the camera detects that the subject is in backlight. Intelligent Scene Selector automatically detects the four most common shooting situations - Portrait, Scenery, Close-up and Low-light - and switches to the appropriate Scene mode. The user can activate all of these functions simply by selecting iA mode.

Panasonic Lumix G1 DSLR Review

Panasonic G1DPInterface have reviewed the new Panasonic G1 Micro Digital SLR - based on the micro four thirds system - It features Full-time Live View both for LCD and LVF, 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor, new smaller LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm MEGA O.I.S. lens, Dust reduction system and tilting 3" screen. It will also be available in three colours for £549

"The Panasonic Lumix G1 is “the world’s smallest” interchangeable lens camera at the moment. It works like a digital SLR, takes pictures like a digital SLR, is as expandable as a digital SLR… but it takes away the mirror box (and thus the optical viewfinder) so it can be small and quiet. Despite the “world’s smallest” claim being true, the G1 isn’t exactly what you’d call tiny or pocketable. Rather, it’s just slightly smaller than most other digital SLRs of its class (entry-level ones)."

It also features a stereo microphone, featuring Dolby Digital Stereo Creator to record high quality audio. Just press the 'one touch' Motion Picture button, and shooting begins. "Panasonic has a well-earned reputation for making very good but very expensive high-performance compacts, but with the FS7 it has proven that it can bring the same level of quality to the mid-price market. It offers superb build quality, stylish and ergonomic design, ease of use and acceptably quick performance, combined with excellent image quality. Panasonic Lumix LS80 Review

Panasonic LS80DPInterface have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumic DMC-LS80 - a budget 8 megapixel digital camera with a 4x optical zoom lens with Mega Optical Image Stabilisation, ISO upto 1600, and a 2.5" screen. The camera is available for £75

"The Panasonic Lumix LS80 is a basic entry-level camera with 8 megapixels, 3X optical zoom and a 2.5 inch LCD. The LCD is very usable and the lens which starts at 33 mm is a small but useful plus. The LS80’s plastic build is not flimsy but I did find that memory card door not very sturdy and it doesn’t open up wide, making it hard to swap memory cards. There’s no speaker here either, means you can record movies with sound but only hear it later on your computer."

The Panasonic LX3 is available for £327

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37 Review

Panasonic FX37DPInterface have reviewed the new ultra compact Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37 - and update to the FX35 - key features are a 25mm Ultra-Wide-Angle* 5x Optical Zoom Lens (*35mm equivalent: 25-125mm), in Sleek, Super-Slim Profile, 10.1-megapixel sensor, Featuring Advanced Intelligent Auto Mode, Mega optical image stabilisation, 1280 x 720p motion video at 30 fps, and a 2.5" screen. The DMC-FX37 is available in silver, black and brown for £177

"The Panasonic Lumix FX37 is a very capable and very small digital camera with 10 megapixels, an ultra-wide 5X zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD. I would say the FX37 has an advantage over the competition with its 5X zoom lens that starts at 25 mm. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Review

Panasonic FZ28Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 - an update to the FZ18 - it features a 27mm Wide Angle 18x optical zoom lens, optical image stabilisation, 13fps at 3mp, Full Manual Operation, a 10.1 megapixels CCD, ISO1600, and a 2.7" screen. The FZ28 is available for £245

"True to the line, the Panasonic Lumix FZ28 is a good quality digital camera with a long, 18x zoom. Image quality is excellent at wide angle, and only suffers a bit in the corners at telephoto. Most impressive is the Panasonic FZ28's low chromatic aberration at wide angle, as well as the sharp corners, something most long zoom digital cameras cannot achieve."

Best Digital Cameras of 2008

DigiCamReview Best of 20082008 has certainly been an interesting year with literally hundreds of new cameras released - the majority of them all feature the same boring specifications - a standard 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5" screen, and about 8 megapixels - but if you look closely you will find the gems - increasing numbers of cameras now feature a wide angle lens, optical image stabilisation, HD video recording, and extended optical zoom. The best example of this, and in our opinion, the best digital camera of 2008, is...

Panasonic TZ5The Panasonic Lumix TZ5 - it scores highly on all aspects, it offers 9 megapixels, a wide angle 10x optical zoom lens, a large 3" screen, a compact pocketable metal body, and optical image stabilisation, not only that but offers high definition video recording with optical zoom and image stabilisation. This would all be useless unless the camera backed this up with good image quality, and thankfully this camera provides that with good detail and great colour. If you had to buy only one camera this year, or indeed next, then the Panasonic Lumix TZ5 would be our choice. Read our Panasonic Lumix TZ5 Review for more information - the TZ5 is available for £176.

Sony Ericsson C905Already extremely popular, the Sony Ericsson Cybershot C905 takes 8 megapixel photos, features a real flash, and is available without breaking the bank, and whilst not as good at taking photos as a dedicated digital camera, the Sony C905 could make a useful second camera and shows that camera phones are catching up in quality and usability. Have a look at our sample photos.

Best Prototype of 2008:

Olympus Micro Four Thirds PrototypeUnfortunately this camera system won't be available till next year, but should revolutionise the digital camera market by providing an interchangeable lens camera with the dimensions of a serious compact camera! Of course I'm talking about the Olympus Micro Four Thirds Prototype. Full details can be found here when we had a look at Photokina.

Other great Digital Cameras of 2008:

Fuji F100fdFor the lowest noise in a compact camera and great detail, the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd has to be commended - it takes great 12 megapixel photos, features a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens and has a compact metal body, if only it had full manual controls and a better menu system and it might have been featured above. Read our Fujifilm FinePix F100fd Review, available for £185.

Canon Powershot SX110 ISThe Canon Powershot SX110 IS - a personal favourite of mine - features a more compact body (compared to the SX100 IS), 9 megapixel sensor, larger 3" screen, 10x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Face Detection, Face Select & Track, Auto Red-Eye Correction, Motion Detection, 20 shooting modes including Easy Mode, ISO 1600 and is one of the cheapest new Canon's with manual controls. Prosumer Digital Camera Group Review

Panasonic TZ5DPReview have reviewed several prosumer cameras including the Canon SX110 IS, and the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 - the camera features a wide angle 28mm 10x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, 9 megapixel sensor, and 3.0" screen. The camera will be available in March in silver, black, and blue. The TZ5 also features Digital Red-eye Correction, and is available for £175

"The TZ5 ticks so many boxes that you can forgive its rather unimpressive pixel-level image quality - and to be honest you won't even see it in normal prints. The standout feature is the excellent and truly versatile 28-280mm zoom lens, but on its own that wouldn't be enough to win our love; it's the whole package that works so well: the stylish, pocketable casing, the reliable automatic systems, the clean, logical user interface and the keen pricing."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Review

Panasonic LX3DPExpert have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumic DMC-LX3 - the camera features a F2.0 24mm Ultra Wide Angle lens (24 - 60mm), optical image stabilisation, a larger 10 megapixel sensor with higher sensitivity, ISO3200 at Full Resolution, Full Manual Operation, HD Motion Images and HD Output, and a 3.0-inch screen. The Panasonic LX3 is available for £329

"Panasonic deliberately constrained the pixel density on the LX3 to improve picture quality. They chose a limited zoom range in order to increase maximum aperture and resolution. The company has dared to do what serious photographers have been requesting, and they have ignored marketing focus groups. Bravo!"

Premium Compact Digital Cameras Reviewed

Panasonic FX150DPReview have reviewed several premium compact digital cameras including the Fuji FinePix F100fd and the new Panasonic Lumix FX150 - a 14.7 megapixel digital camera - it features a 28mm Wide Angle 3.6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Intelligent Auto Mode with AF Tracking, Simple Manual Operation, up to ISO1600 at Full Resolution, and a 2.7" screen. It is available in silver or black for £205.

"Panasonic, like Canon, has a compact camera lineup that has been allowed to slowly evolve into a mature, refined range of products with the emphasis far more on useful photographic features and reliable automatic systems than on gadgetry and novelty. The FX150 feels and acts like a camera that was built to take pictures (something you simply can't say about them all), and for the most part it does so pretty well without needing constant supervision."

Panasonic Lumix FX150 Review

Panasonic FX150DPInterface have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FX150 - a 14.7 megapixel digital camera - it features a 28mm Wide Angle 3.6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Intelligent Auto Mode with AF Tracking, Simple Manual Operation, up to ISO1600 at Full Resolution, and a 2.7" screen. "Contrary to popular belief, such a high resolution compact camera can still produce very decent pictures. The Panasonic Lumix FX150 took good quality photos up till ISO 400, with the availability of ISO 800 for “just in case” situations. While colors were vivid and pictures were on the sharp side, the camera did suffer from a bit of detail loss at higher ISO settings."

Panasonic FX37Cameras.co.uk have reviewed the new ultra compact Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37 - and update to the FX35 - key features are a 25mm Ultra-Wide-Angle* 5x Optical Zoom Lens (*35mm equivalent: 25-125mm), in Sleek, Super-Slim Profile, 10.1-megapixel sensor, Featuring Advanced Intelligent Auto Mode, Mega optical image stabilisation, 1280 x 720p motion video at 30 fps, and a 2.5" screen. The DMC-FX37 is available in silver, black and brown for £187

The Panasonic LX3 is available for £309

Panasonic Lumix G1 Digital SLR Review

Panasonic G1Luminous Landscape have reviewed the new Panasonic G1 Micro Digital SLR - based on the micro four thirds system - It features Full-time Live View both for LCD and LVF, 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor, new smaller LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm MEGA O.I.S. lens, Dust reduction system and tilting 3" screen. It will also be available in three colours for £549

"The Panasonic G1 is an appealing camera. It's small size, light weight, and high image quality come together in a slightly pricey but basically affordable package. Though Lord knows I have enough cameras, I was so taken with the G1's compactness, decent standard lens, and image quality that a body and two lenses are now part of my travel kit for when a regular sized DSLR is just a bit too much weight and bulk, and pocket camera doesn't offer quite enough reach or high ISO sensitivity."

"In terms of image quality, the Panasonic G1 also gets most things right. As you'd expect with the G1 using a regular Four Thirds sensor, the quality is very similar to other Four Thirds cameras that we've reviewed. Chromatic aberrations are kept to a minimum with both kit lenses, colours are accurate when using the default Standard setting."

Panasonic Lumix FZ28 Review

Panasonic FZ28Cameralabs have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 - an update to the FZ18 - it features a 27mm Wide Angle 18x optical zoom lens, optical image stabilisation, 13fps at 3mp, Full Manual Operation, a 10.1 megapixels CCD, ISO1600, and a 2.7" screen. The FZ28 is available for £225

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 represents a fairly minor upgrade over its predecessor, but given that was our favourite super-zoom of 2007, the new model has a great deal going for it. So with the FZ28 you get a compact, lightweight super-zoom camera with 10 Megapixel resolution, a huge 18x optically-stabilised range, HD video recording in the 720p format, support for RAW files, a mid-sized, but good-looking 2.7in screen, manual controls and one of the best fully automatic modes on the market. It’s a lot of camera for the money."

Panasonic Lumix G1 Digital SLR Review

Panasonic G1Gizmodo have reviewed the new Panasonic G1 Micro Digital SLR - based on the micro four thirds system - It features Full-time Live View both for LCD and LVF, 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor, new smaller LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm MEGA O.I.S. lens, Dust reduction system and tilting 3" screen. It will also be available in three colours for £499

"I am optimistic about Micro Four Thirds, but there's just no reason anyone should buy a G1. Less money could get you a real DSLR that is, for all practical purposes, the same size. The G1's digital viewfinder is excellent, but it's no comparison to looking at the real world as you shoot. Factor in the G1's relatively poor high-ISO performance and tiny lens selection and it's a no brainer."

"AAs the very first camera in a substantially new and different format, we're impressed with the Panasonic Lumix G1. The company has successfully conquered the nagging problem of delivering an effective Live View system in an interchangeable-lens camera, and done so in a design that's both compact and comfortable. Image quality results from the lab also earned our respect."

Panasonic G1Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Panasonic G1 Micro Digital SLR - based on the micro four thirds system - It features Full-time Live View both for LCD and LVF, 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor, new smaller LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm MEGA O.I.S. lens, Dust reduction system and tilting 3" screen. "And it takes a pretty darn good picture too. Because the sensor is smaller than modern APS-C-sized digital SLRs, you'd expect image quality to be slightly lower, but printed results really show surprising parity. I took a couple of 13x19-inch print samples from the Panasonic G1 and the Canon Rebel XSi down to the lab guys and asked them to pick their favorites. It was too close to call."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150 Review

Panasonic FX150Steves Digicams have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FX150 - a new 14.7 megapixel digital camera - it features a 28mm Wide Angle 3.6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Intelligent Auto Mode with AF Tracking, Simple Manual Operation, up to ISO1600 at Full Resolution, and a 2.7" screen. It is available in silver or black for £218.

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150 was a blast to use. Some might question the quality of its 14-megapixel images, however I feel this camera can create awesome images that will make beautiful large prints. Thanks to the MAX ISO feature, you can be sure that image noise is not an issue, and thankfully the FX150's effective Mega O.I.S. system will also help fight image blur and camera shake in your photos."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Review

Panasonic LX3DPReview have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumic DMC-LX3 - the camera features a F2.0 24mm Ultra Wide Angle lens (24 - 60mm), optical image stabilisation, a larger 10 megapixel sensor with higher sensitivity, ISO3200 at Full Resolution, Full Manual Operation, HD Motion Images and HD Output, and a 3.0-inch screen. The Panasonic LX3 is available for £298

"The LX3 is an example of a species so endangered that the we were beginning to worry it had become extinct - a compact camera that photographers can get excited about. Panasonic has included a large degree of direct control, classy styling and, more importantly, a specification that goes beyond the unthinking 'larger screen and more megapixels' trend."

Canon G10 Nikon P6000 Panasonic LX3 Review

Canon Powershot G10ByThom have reviewed the new 14.7 megapixel Canon Powershot G10 and compared it to the Nikon Coolpix P6000 and Panasonic Lumix LX3. The G10 is an update to the G9 - it features a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, RAW support, 3" screen, VGA video recording and ISO1600. The Canon G10 is available for £372:

"Unfortunately, no single camera quite hits the nail fully on the head. For my mark, the Canon comes the closest for my types of use, though the Panasonic provides capabilities that I sometimes need and stays in the bag, too. The Nikon will get sold off and I'll go back to waiting for Nikon to design a decent compact."

It looks great, performs well, and produces superior image quality. It may be expensive, but there’s no doubt it’s worth every penny."

Panasonic Lumix G1 DSLR Review

Panasonic G1DCResource have reviewed the new Panasonic G1 Micro Digital SLR - based on the micro four thirds system - It features Full-time Live View both for LCD and LVF, 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor, new smaller LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm MEGA O.I.S. lens, Dust reduction system and tilting 3" screen. It will also be available in three colours for £567

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 is the smallest interchangeable lens camera in the world. It may be the first of a totally new design of cameras (Micro FourThirds), but you'd never know it. Panasonic has done a superb job with the G1 in nearly all respects. It produces very good quality photos, offers an unmatched live view shooting experience, and has a nice collection of both automatic and manual controls."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3 FS5 Review

Panasonic FS20DPInterface have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumic DMC-FS3 and FS5 - the cameras feature an 8 or 10 megapixel sensor, 3x or 4x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, and 2.5" screen. The FS3 is available for £99, and the FS5 is available for £129:

"The compact little Panasonic Lumix FS3 and FS5 cameras are two which have much to offer with their small designs, nice point-and-shoot operation and great performance. Set aside their minor differences, both cameras have features which casual picture takers will appreciate: optical image stabilization, face detection that works (if shooting head on) and a nicely viewable 2.5 inch LCD."

Panasonic LX3Luminous Landscape have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumic DMC-LX3 - the camera features a F2.0 24mm Ultra Wide Angle lens (24 - 60mm), optical image stabilisation, a larger 10 megapixel sensor with higher sensitivity, ISO3200 at Full Resolution, Full Manual Operation, HD Motion Images and HD Output, and a 3.0-inch screen. "This camera's combination of high build quality, a terrific lens, wide angle coverage, a wide aperture second to none, and extensive and easy to use manual controls, makes it quite appealing to the serious photographer looking for a pocket camera. We should be under no illusion that a camera like this is a replacement for even the lowliest DSLR when it comes to image quality though."

The Panasonic LX3 is available for £325

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 is a unique, fixed-lens camera for wide-angle enthusiasts. It offers very good photo quality (though there's room for improvement), a fast, ultra-wide lens, full manual controls, a sharp 3-inch LCD display, and support for all kinds of optional extras. It's not for everyone -- I think many people will be put off by its limited zoom range -- but if you like what the LX3 has to offer, then it's well worth a look."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Review

Panasonic FZ28DPExpert have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 - an update to the FZ18 - it features a 27mm Wide Angle 18x optical zoom lens, optical image stabilisation, 13fps at 3mp, Full Manual Operation, a 10.1 megapixels CCD, ISO1600, and a 2.7" screen. The FZ28 is available for £227

"This camera is a pleasure to use. The bad old days of intolerable shutter lag in all-in-one superzooms are well behind us – the Panasonic is as responsive as any compact camera. It can’t match a true SLR, but it is priced against the low end entry SLRs, so when it comes to choosing a camera the advantages of the FZ28 are bulk and weight and the fabulous lens."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150 Review

Panasonic FX150Cameras.co.uk have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FX150 - a new 14.7 megapixel digital camera - it features a 28mm Wide Angle 3.6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Intelligent Auto Mode with AF Tracking, Simple Manual Operation, up to ISO1600 at Full Resolution, and a 2.7" screen. It is available in silver or black for £257.

"This is a good all round camera. Looking at the basic spec you may consider the lens to lack zoom capacity, but even this can be turned around if you shoot at lower resolutions. With 14.7 megapixels available you certainly have plenty of scope to do so. Picture quality is good and there are some useful extra features you will struggle to find elsewhere."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 Review

Panasonic TZ5DPInterface have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 - the camera features a wide angle 28mm 10x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, 9 megapixel sensor, and 3.0" screen. The camera will be available in March in silver, black, and blue. The TZ5 also features Digital Red-eye Correction, and is available for £175

"The Panasonic Lumix TZ5 is a relatively compact camera for a super-zoom. It has a useful 10X optical zoom lens which starts at 28 mm and it comes with optical image stabilization. While there's a nice lens in front, there's a fancy LCD on the back too. The Panasonic Lumix TZ5 has a large, high-resolution 3 inch LCD, on which you can see what you're framing in almost any condtiion. Some things like the plastic doors and tripod mount could be better though."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Review

Panasonic LX3PhotoReview have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumic DMC-LX3 - the camera features a F2.0 24mm Ultra Wide Angle lens (24 - 60mm), optical image stabilisation, a larger 10 megapixel sensor with higher sensitivity, ISO3200 at Full Resolution, Full Manual Operation, HD Motion Images and HD Output, and a 3.0-inch screen. The Panasonic LX3 is available for £335:

"Successor to the popular DMC-LX2 model, the Panasonic DMC-LX3 represents a significant upgrade to its predecessor. Panasonic claims to have improved 'every component' to deliver a camera that will appeal to DSLR photographers who want a capable compact camera with all the necessary features and functions as a complement to their main camera."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Review

Panasonic LX3Digital Camera Info have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumic DMC-LX3 - the camera features a F2.0 24mm Ultra Wide Angle lens (24 - 60mm), optical image stabilisation, a larger 10 megapixel sensor with higher sensitivity, ISO3200 at Full Resolution, Full Manual Operation, HD Motion Images and HD Output, and a 3.0-inch screen. The Panasonic LX3 is available for £335:

"The LX3 has excellent manual controls, expandability, and a solid feel we wish was in more point-and-shoot cameras. Yet, at the same time, it scored poor to average on most of our tests, lacks a fluorescent white balance preset, and has a poorly executed menu system. It's a camera we want to love: if it cost less we would be more forgiving of the mediocre test results. But for $500, we expect something better, and as much we admire the aesthetics, feel and control offered by the LX3, it costs too much and performs too poorly."
