Best Digital Cameras of 2008

DigiCamReview Best of 20082008 has certainly been an interesting year with literally hundreds of new cameras released - the majority of them all feature the same boring specifications - a standard 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5" screen, and about 8 megapixels - but if you look closely you will find the gems - increasing numbers of cameras now feature a wide angle lens, optical image stabilisation, HD video recording, and extended optical zoom. The best example of this, and in our opinion, the best digital camera of 2008, is...

Panasonic TZ5The Panasonic Lumix TZ5 - it scores highly on all aspects, it offers 9 megapixels, a wide angle 10x optical zoom lens, a large 3" screen, a compact pocketable metal body, and optical image stabilisation, not only that but offers high definition video recording with optical zoom and image stabilisation. This would all be useless unless the camera backed this up with good image quality, and thankfully this camera provides that with good detail and great colour. If you had to buy only one camera this year, or indeed next, then the Panasonic Lumix TZ5 would be our choice. Read our Panasonic Lumix TZ5 Review for more information - the TZ5 is available for £176.

Have a look at our sample photos.

Best Prototype of 2008:

Olympus Micro Four Thirds PrototypeUnfortunately this camera system won't be available till next year, but should revolutionise the digital camera market by providing an interchangeable lens camera with the dimensions of a serious compact camera! Of course I'm talking about the Olympus Micro Four Thirds Prototype. Full details can be found here when we had a look at Photokina.

Other great Digital Cameras of 2008:

Fuji F100fdFor the lowest noise in a compact camera and great detail, the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd has to be commended - it takes great 12 megapixel photos, features a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens and has a compact metal body, if only it had full manual controls and a better menu system and it might have been featured above. Prosumer Digital Camera Group Review

Panasonic TZ5DPReview have reviewed several prosumer cameras including the Canon SX110 IS, and the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 - the camera features a wide angle 28mm 10x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, 9 megapixel sensor, and 3.0" screen. The camera will be available in March in silver, black, and blue. The TZ5 also features Digital Red-eye Correction, and is available for £175

"The TZ5 ticks so many boxes that you can forgive its rather unimpressive pixel-level image quality - and to be honest you won't even see it in normal prints. The standout feature is the excellent and truly versatile 28-280mm zoom lens, but on its own that wouldn't be enough to win our love; it's the whole package that works so well: the stylish, pocketable casing, the reliable automatic systems, the clean, logical user interface and the keen pricing."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Review

Panasonic LX3DPExpert have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumic DMC-LX3 - the camera features a F2.0 24mm Ultra Wide Angle lens (24 - 60mm), optical image stabilisation, a larger 10 megapixel sensor with higher sensitivity, ISO3200 at Full Resolution, Full Manual Operation, HD Motion Images and HD Output, and a 3.0-inch screen. The Panasonic LX3 is available for £329

"Panasonic deliberately constrained the pixel density on the LX3 to improve picture quality. They chose a limited zoom range in order to increase maximum aperture and resolution. The company has dared to do what serious photographers have been requesting, and they have ignored marketing focus groups. Bravo!"

Premium Compact Digital Cameras Reviewed

Panasonic FX150DPReview have reviewed several premium compact digital cameras including the Fuji FinePix F100fd and the new Panasonic Lumix FX150 - a 14.7 megapixel digital camera - it features a 28mm Wide Angle 3.6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Intelligent Auto Mode with AF Tracking, Simple Manual Operation, up to ISO1600 at Full Resolution, and a 2.7" screen. It is available in silver or black for £205.

"Panasonic, like Canon, has a compact camera lineup that has been allowed to slowly evolve into a mature, refined range of products with the emphasis far more on useful photographic features and reliable automatic systems than on gadgetry and novelty. The FX150 feels and acts like a camera that was built to take pictures (something you simply can't say about them all), and for the most part it does so pretty well without needing constant supervision."

Panasonic Lumix FX150 Review

Panasonic FX150DPInterface have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FX150 - a 14.7 megapixel digital camera - it features a 28mm Wide Angle 3.6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Intelligent Auto Mode with AF Tracking, Simple Manual Operation, up to ISO1600 at Full Resolution, and a 2.7" screen. It is available in silver or black for £205.

"Contrary to popular belief, such a high resolution compact camera can still produce very decent pictures. The Panasonic Lumix FX150 took good quality photos up till ISO 400, with the availability of ISO 800 for “just in case” situations. While colors were vivid and pictures were on the sharp side, the camera did suffer from a bit of detail loss at higher ISO settings."

The DMC-FX37 is available in silver, black and brown for £187

Panasonic Lumix LX3 Review

Panasonic LX3Ryan Brenizer has reviewed the new Panasonic Lumic DMC-LX3 - the camera features a F2.0 24mm Ultra Wide Angle lens (24 - 60mm), optical image stabilisation, a larger 10 megapixel sensor with higher sensitivity, ISO3200 at Full Resolution, Full Manual Operation, HD Motion Images and HD Output, and a 3.0-inch screen. The Panasonic LX3 is available for £309

"Low-Light quality: It's no D3 -- in fact, any current DSLR should beat it handily -- but between the fast lens, decent sensor and anti-shake, it does really well for a compact camera." (via 1001noisycameras)

Panasonic Lumix G1 Digital SLR Review

Panasonic G1Luminous Landscape have reviewed the new Panasonic G1 Micro Digital SLR - based on the micro four thirds system - It features Full-time Live View both for LCD and LVF, 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor, new smaller LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm MEGA O.I.S. lens, Dust reduction system and tilting 3" screen. It will also be available in three colours for £549

"The Panasonic G1 is an appealing camera. It's small size, light weight, and high image quality come together in a slightly pricey but basically affordable package. Though Lord knows I have enough cameras, I was so taken with the G1's compactness, decent standard lens, and image quality that a body and two lenses are now part of my travel kit for when a regular sized DSLR is just a bit too much weight and bulk, and pocket camera doesn't offer quite enough reach or high ISO sensitivity."

Panasonic Lumix G1 Digital SLR Review

Panasonic G1Photography BLOG have reviewed the new Panasonic G1 Micro Digital SLR - based on the micro four thirds system - It features Full-time Live View both for LCD and LVF, 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor, new smaller LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm MEGA O.I.S. lens, Dust reduction system and tilting 3" screen. It will also be available in three colours for £549

"In terms of image quality, the Panasonic G1 also gets most things right. As you'd expect with the G1 using a regular Four Thirds sensor, the quality is very similar to other Four Thirds cameras that we've reviewed. Chromatic aberrations are kept to a minimum with both kit lenses, colours are accurate when using the default Standard setting."

Panasonic Lumix FZ28 Review

Panasonic FZ28Cameralabs have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 - an update to the FZ18 - it features a 27mm Wide Angle 18x optical zoom lens, optical image stabilisation, 13fps at 3mp, Full Manual Operation, a 10.1 megapixels CCD, ISO1600, and a 2.7" screen. The FZ28 is available for £225

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 represents a fairly minor upgrade over its predecessor, but given that was our favourite super-zoom of 2007, the new model has a great deal going for it. So with the FZ28 you get a compact, lightweight super-zoom camera with 10 Megapixel resolution, a huge 18x optically-stabilised range, HD video recording in the 720p format, support for RAW files, a mid-sized, but good-looking 2.7in screen, manual controls and one of the best fully automatic modes on the market. It’s a lot of camera for the money."

Panasonic Lumix G1 Digital SLR Review

Panasonic G1Gizmodo have reviewed the new Panasonic G1 Micro Digital SLR - based on the micro four thirds system - It features Full-time Live View both for LCD and LVF, 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor, new smaller LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm MEGA O.I.S. lens, Dust reduction system and tilting 3" screen. It will also be available in three colours for £499

"I am optimistic about Micro Four Thirds, but there's just no reason anyone should buy a G1. Less money could get you a real DSLR that is, for all practical purposes, the same size. The G1's digital viewfinder is excellent, but it's no comparison to looking at the real world as you shoot. Factor in the G1's relatively poor high-ISO performance and tiny lens selection and it's a no brainer."

Panasonic G1Digital Camera Info have reviewed the new Panasonic G1 Micro Digital SLR - based on the micro four thirds system - It features Full-time Live View both for LCD and LVF, 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor, new smaller LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm MEGA O.I.S. lens, Dust reduction system and tilting 3" screen. "AAs the very first camera in a substantially new and different format, we're impressed with the Panasonic Lumix G1. The company has successfully conquered the nagging problem of delivering an effective Live View system in an interchangeable-lens camera, and done so in a design that's both compact and comfortable. Image quality results from the lab also earned our respect."

Panasonic Lumix G1 DSLR Review

Panasonic G1Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Panasonic G1 Micro Digital SLR - based on the micro four thirds system - It features Full-time Live View both for LCD and LVF, 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor, new smaller LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm MEGA O.I.S. lens, Dust reduction system and tilting 3" screen. It will also be available in three colours for £499

"And it takes a pretty darn good picture too. Because the sensor is smaller than modern APS-C-sized digital SLRs, you'd expect image quality to be slightly lower, but printed results really show surprising parity. I took a couple of 13x19-inch print samples from the Panasonic G1 and the Canon Rebel XSi down to the lab guys and asked them to pick their favorites. It was too close to call."

Panasonic FX150Steves Digicams have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FX150 - a new 14.7 megapixel digital camera - it features a 28mm Wide Angle 3.6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Intelligent Auto Mode with AF Tracking, Simple Manual Operation, up to ISO1600 at Full Resolution, and a 2.7" screen. "The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150 was a blast to use. Some might question the quality of its 14-megapixel images, however I feel this camera can create awesome images that will make beautiful large prints. Thanks to the MAX ISO feature, you can be sure that image noise is not an issue, and thankfully the FX150's effective Mega O.I.S. system will also help fight image blur and camera shake in your photos."

The Panasonic LX3 is available for £298

"The LX3 is an example of a species so endangered that the we were beginning to worry it had become extinct - a compact camera that photographers can get excited about. Panasonic has included a large degree of direct control, classy styling and, more importantly, a specification that goes beyond the unthinking 'larger screen and more megapixels' trend."

Canon G10 Nikon P6000 Panasonic LX3 Review

Canon Powershot G10ByThom have reviewed the new 14.7 megapixel Canon Powershot G10 and compared it to the Nikon Coolpix P6000 and Panasonic Lumix LX3. The G10 is an update to the G9 - it features a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, RAW support, 3" screen, VGA video recording and ISO1600. The Canon G10 is available for £372:

"Unfortunately, no single camera quite hits the nail fully on the head. For my mark, the Canon comes the closest for my types of use, though the Panasonic provides capabilities that I sometimes need and stays in the bag, too. The Nikon will get sold off and I'll go back to waiting for Nikon to design a decent compact."

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 is the smallest interchangeable lens camera in the world. It may be the first of a totally new design of cameras (Micro FourThirds), but you'd never know it. Panasonic has done a superb job with the G1 in nearly all respects. It produces very good quality photos, offers an unmatched live view shooting experience, and has a nice collection of both automatic and manual controls."

"The compact little Panasonic Lumix FS3 and FS5 cameras are two which have much to offer with their small designs, nice point-and-shoot operation and great performance. Set aside their minor differences, both cameras have features which casual picture takers will appreciate: optical image stabilization, face detection that works (if shooting head on) and a nicely viewable 2.5 inch LCD."

"This camera's combination of high build quality, a terrific lens, wide angle coverage, a wide aperture second to none, and extensive and easy to use manual controls, makes it quite appealing to the serious photographer looking for a pocket camera. The Panasonic LX3 is available for £325

"The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 is a unique, fixed-lens camera for wide-angle enthusiasts. It offers very good photo quality (though there's room for improvement), a fast, ultra-wide lens, full manual controls, a sharp 3-inch LCD display, and support for all kinds of optional extras. It's not for everyone -- I think many people will be put off by its limited zoom range -- but if you like what the LX3 has to offer, then it's well worth a look."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Review

Panasonic FZ28DPExpert have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 - an update to the FZ18 - it features a 27mm Wide Angle 18x optical zoom lens, optical image stabilisation, 13fps at 3mp, Full Manual Operation, a 10.1 megapixels CCD, ISO1600, and a 2.7" screen. The FZ28 is available for £227

"This camera is a pleasure to use. The bad old days of intolerable shutter lag in all-in-one superzooms are well behind us – the Panasonic is as responsive as any compact camera. It can’t match a true SLR, but it is priced against the low end entry SLRs, so when it comes to choosing a camera the advantages of the FZ28 are bulk and weight and the fabulous lens."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150 Review

Panasonic FX150Cameras.co.uk have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix FX150 - a new 14.7 megapixel digital camera - it features a 28mm Wide Angle 3.6x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, Intelligent Auto Mode with AF Tracking, Simple Manual Operation, up to ISO1600 at Full Resolution, and a 2.7" screen. It is available in silver or black for £257.

"This is a good all round camera. Looking at the basic spec you may consider the lens to lack zoom capacity, but even this can be turned around if you shoot at lower resolutions. With 14.7 megapixels available you certainly have plenty of scope to do so. Picture quality is good and there are some useful extra features you will struggle to find elsewhere."
