It’s impossible to give a real idea of what the camera can do on this blog site, but this little clip gives some indication of the accuracy of focus and exposure and shows the remarkable resolution of the video mode. The TZ7 takes the “hybrid” concept onto a new plane."

"The Canon PowerShot SX200 IS is a very capable and compact ultra zoom camera. It offers very good photo quality, a 28 - 336 mm lens, a nice combination of automatic and manual controls, a large LCD, and a HD movie mode. It's not perfect though; it has a weak, slow-to-charge flash, battery life is below average, and you can't zoom while recording a movie mode. Despite that, the PowerShot SX200 is a good choice for a travel camera, and it earns my recommendation."

Best Digital Cameras of 2008

2008 has certainly been an interesting year with literally hundreds of new cameras released - the majority of them all feature the same boring specifications - a standard 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5" screen, and about 8 megapixels - but if you look closely you will find the gems - increasing numbers of cameras now feature a wide angle lens, optical image stabilisation, HD video recording, and extended optical zoom. The best example of this, and in our opinion, the best digital camera of 2008, is...

The Panasonic Lumix TZ5 - it scores highly on all aspects, it offers 9 megapixels, a wide angle 10x optical zoom lens, a large 3" screen, a compact pocketable metal body, and optical image stabilisation, not only that but offers high definition video recording with optical zoom and image stabilisation. This would all be useless unless the camera backed this up with good image quality, and thankfully this camera provides that with good detail and great colour. If you had to buy only one camera this year, or indeed next, then the Panasonic Lumix TZ5 would be our choice. Already extremely popular, the Sony Ericsson Cybershot C905 takes 8 megapixel photos, features a real flash, and is available without breaking the bank, and whilst not as good at taking photos as a dedicated digital camera, the Sony C905 could make a useful second camera and shows that camera phones are catching up in quality and usability. Best Prototype of 2008:

Unfortunately this camera system won't be available till next year, but should revolutionise the digital camera market by providing an interchangeable lens camera with the dimensions of a serious compact camera! For the lowest noise in a compact camera and great detail, the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd has to be commended - it takes great 12 megapixel photos, features a wide angle 5x optical zoom lens and has a compact metal body, if only it had full manual controls and a better menu system and it might have been featured above. "The SX110 IS improves on the SX100 with higher resolution, smaller less bulky body, new 3" screen, and better layout of controls, all for roughly the same price. Unfortunately the camera is still missing a wide angle lens, HD video, suffers from purple fringing, and high noise. Apart from these issues, image quality is generally very good, with excellent detail, sharpness, colour, and saturation - as long as you stick to the lower ISO settings."

Nikon Coolpix P80 at Photokina 2008

Nikon were showing the Nikon Coolpix P80 Ultra Zoom at Photokina - it features a wide angle 18x optical zoom lens (27-486mm equivalent), 10 megapixel sensor, sensor-shift vibration reduction, 2.7" screen, ISO6400, 1cm macro mode, and Distortion control corrects for barrel distortion. Fujifilm FinePix Digital Cameras at Photokina

Fujifilm were showing the full range of Fujifilm FinePix digital cameras including the new S2000hd - an update to the S1000fd - it features a wide angle 15x optical zoom lens, 10 megapixel sensor, HD recording (1280 x 720 pixels video) and output, it comes with a remote control and cable, a 2.7" screen, ISO 1600, image stabilisation, and manual mode. The FinePix S2000HD is available for £199.

Casio were showing the new ultra high speed, ultra zoom Casio Exilim Pro EX-FH20 at Photokina - it features a 9 megapixel CMOS sensor, a 26mm wide angle 20x optical zoom lens, 40 fps shooting at 7 megapixels, High Definition (HD) video recording at 1280 x 720 pixels, at 30 fps, RAW, 1cm macro, ISO upto 1600 and has a large 3" screen.

The 40fps shooting mode lets you playback the photos as though you have recorded a video at 7 megapixels per frame!

Samsung HZ1 Ultra Zoom Announced

Samsung have announced the new Samsung HZ1 ultra wide angle ultra zoom - with a 24mm 10x optical zoom lens, 10 megapixel sensor, dual image stabilisation, and will be available at the beginning of 2009:

"Samsung expands the focal length range and announces further with the HZ1 the world's first ultra wide-angle camera to Superzoom. The novelty has a 24-240 mm Wide and thus covers the wide-pronounced, as well as the strong telephoto range." (via Photography BLOG)

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 Review

DPInterface have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 - the camera features a wide angle 28mm 10x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, 9 megapixel sensor, and 3.0" screen. The camera will be available in March in silver, black, and blue. The TZ5 also features Digital Red-eye Correction, and is available for £175

"The Panasonic Lumix TZ5 is a relatively compact camera for a super-zoom. It has a useful 10X optical zoom lens which starts at 28 mm and it comes with optical image stabilization. While there's a nice lens in front, there's a fancy LCD on the back too. The Panasonic Lumix TZ5 has a large, high-resolution 3 inch LCD, on which you can see what you're framing in almost any condtiion. Some things like the plastic doors and tripod mount could be better though."

"The Kodak EasyShare Z8612 IS may be relatively cheap for a long-zoom model, but its numerous shortcomings mean that it’s not particularly good value for money. Build quality is below average, it has a number of annoying handling problems, and overall performance is very slow. While image quality isn’t completely awful there are also some problems in this area."
