Sony Alpha A99
ePHOTOzine has reviewed the 24 megapixel full frame Sony Alpha A99 Digital SLR with Sony Translucent technology, a high resolution OLED electronic viewfinder, 6fps continuous shooting and continuous AF during video recording. It’s also weather sealed and has built in sensor-shift image stabilisation. Here’s what they had to say:

“The Sony Alpha A99 is literally packed with features with built in image stabilisation, GPS, high speed shooting, HDR modes, a high resolution OLED EVF, a tilting / swivelling 3 inch screen (unique in full frame DSLRs), electronic level, and weather sealed body to name just some of the features.”

Sony NEX-6 with 16-50mm lensePHOTOzine has posted the first full review of the Sony NEX-6, the latest mirrorless compact system camera from Sony – it features a 16 megapixel APS-C sensor, high resolution OLED electronic viewfinder, Wi-Fi, 3inch screen and 10fps continuous shooting. It’s also available with the new collapsible 16-50mm Sony OSS lens, making it much more compact as a kit zoom compared to previous Sony NEX cameras.

Pocket Zoom or Travel Zoom cameras are becoming increasingly popular, as they offer a large optical zoom (often 10x or more) as well as a compact(ish) pocketable body, without the larger bulk of an ultra zoom or bridge camera. They often feature a whole host of other useful things like image stabilisation (essential – and luckily all of these models feature it), full HD video recording, and some feature GPS which can be especially handy when travelling. Here are some reviews of high scoring pocket zoom cameras:

Panasonic Lumix TZ30 BlackPanasonic Lumix TZ30Review at ePHOTOzine – This is one of Panasonic’s top end compact zooms, and Panasonic have been making this “TZ” Travel Zoom range of cameras for a long time, no wonder they’re so good at it – they practically invented the category. 20x optical zoom lens, 14 megapixel sensor, GPS, full HD video, 3inch screen. £239 at Amazon UK.

Sony Cybershot HX10v WhiteSony Cybershot HX10vReview at ePHOTOzine – This camera features a 16x optical zoom lens, and Sony’s 18 megapixel sensor. It also features GPS, and Full HD video with stereo sound and optical zoom, 3inch screen. £222 at Amazon UK.

Canon Powershot SX260 HSCanon Powershot SX260 HSReview at ePHOTOzine – This is one of the more compact models, but also features full manual controls. It’s main features are a 20x optical zoom lens, 12 megapixel backlit CMOS sensor (for better low light performance), GPS, Full HD video, 3inch screen. £229 at Amazon UK.

Olympus:
Not a real Digital SLR, but it sure looks and acts like one, the Olympus OM-D E-M5 gets a 2 month user review.

Sony:
The Sony NEX-F3, an entry level mirrorless camera, with interchangeable lenses. Not a Digital SLR either, but it has the image quality to match, in a more compact package.

Sigma:
The Sigma DP2 Merrill is a compact camera, but with an APS-C Foveon sensor straight from the Sigma SD1. Sample photos can be found here.
