Canon Powershot SX100 ISDCResource have reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon Powershot SX100 IS – the camera features a 10x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, a 2.5″ screen, DIGIC III processor, 1cm macro mode, pop-up flash, manual controls, and ISO upto 1600. The SX100 is available for £173 from Amazon UK

“While it doesn’t really stand out in any one area, the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS is a solid, low-priced ultra zoom camera. The SX100 features a 10X zoom lens, optical image stabilization, full manual controls, and a VGA movie mode. Downsides include a weak, slow-charging flash, no multi-point autofocus, and the inability to swap memory cards while the camera is on a tripod. Despite a few flaws, the SX100 is still an impressive camera for the money.”

Panasonic Lumix FX100Trusted Reviews have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX100 – Panasonic’s new 12 megapixel digital camera – it features a wide angle Leica 3.6x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, 16:9 high resolution (1280 x 720) movie recording, ISO upto 6400, and is available in silver and black for £209:

“The Panasonic Lumix FX100 is a difficult camera. While it has excellent build quality, good performance and an exceptionally fine lens, its usefulness is limited by image noise problems. As it is it is hard to recommend it over the slightly cheaper FX33 (or even the FX55), which has a very similar range of features, better image quality and a lower price.”

“In fact overall the SX100 IS adds up to one of the more competent performers out there in this price bracket, boasting just the sort of shot-to-shot reliability you want when it’s potentially being passed around everyone from little Agnes to Grandma. I was expecting a performance that was OK and was pleasantly surprised when the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS exceeded it.”

“In terms of image quality, the SX100 IS is an excellent lower-priced option than the Canon PowerShot SD-series, but not significantly better than lower-priced options in the PowerShot A-series. In other words, most PowerShot point-and-shoots released this year have very similar image quality, with the exception of the PowerShot TX1 hybrid and PowerShot G9. PowerShot image quality this year has been marked by excellent color accuracy and white balance performance, nice-looking videos, but also lots of noise and low dynamic range at high ISO speeds.”
