Panasonic Lumix FX100DCResource have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX100 – Panasonic’s new 12 megapixel digital camera – it features a wide angle Leica 3.6x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, 16:9 high resolution (1280 x 720) movie recording, ISO upto 6400, and is available in silver and black for £229:

“While it’s not the smallest or most stylish ultra-compact camera out there, the DMC-FX100 is still eye-catching. It’s made mostly of metal, and is well put together, save for the flimsy plastic door over the memory card slot. The camera is available in silver or black. One of the FX100’s claims-to-fame is its 3.6X, 28 – 100 mm lens, a nice change from the usual 35 – 105 mm (or worse) lens found on most cameras in this class. “

Canon Powershot SX100 ISCanon have announced the new 8 megapixel Canon Powershot SX100 IS – it features a 10x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, a 2.5″ screen, DIGIC III processor, 1cm macro mode, pop-up flash, and ISO upto 1600:

It uses two AA batteries to shoot up to approx. 140 images (based on the CIPA standard when the LCD monitor is on), and SD memory cards, SDHC memory cards, MultiMediaCards, MMCplus cards and HC MMCplus cards for the recording media. Images are utilized with a direct print compatible printer, computer and TV via USB 2.0 Hi-Speed. The dimensions (excluding protrusions) of the main body are 108.7 x 71.4 x 46.7 mm (4.3 x 2.8 x 1.8 in.) and the weight is approximately 265 g (9.4 oz.).”

“This 10 megapixel compact camera has two unusual features – its lens and its viewfinder. The lens has a zoom range of 24 to 72mm (film equivalent) which is wider than other compacts and not as long at the telephoto end. The electronic viewfinder is an optional extra that fits into the flash hot shoe and is hinged so that it can be used from above, very handy for low level shots.”

The Ricoh Caplio GX100 will be available at the end of April for £399:

“There are a few downsides to consider, principally the level of noise at ISO 400 and faster, and depending on how deep your pockets are, the price. Ricoh have always chosen the route of “less reduction, more noise”, maintaining image detail but displaying more artifacts at slower ISO speeds than some of their competitors. Consequently images are noisy both onscreen and in prints at ISO 400 and faster. In all other respects the image quality is very good.”
